Lesson Plan

Theme: Zoo
Sub-theme: Zoo animals
Age Group: K2
Number of Children: 8 children
Learning areas: Motor skills development and Numeracy
Duration: 40 minutes
Objectives: Children will be able to recognize and extend simple patterns.
Children will also be able to exhibit space awareness by making sure that
they do not bump into their friends while getting into position.
Disposition: Perseverance. Children will learn to not give up on an activity easily
when faced with a problem and will be able to seek help from their peers or teacher
to complete a difficult task.
Materials: Animal pictures x30
Lanyards with animal pictures
Procedures:
1. Tune-in :
1. Gather the children in front of the whiteboard.
2. Go through the AB/ABB/AAB patterns with them.
3. Introduce the children to animals with patterns eg. zebra (stripes), patches
(tiger) and leopard (spots).

2. Main Activity:
1. Bring the children to a table and get them to sit around the table.
2. Show the children the different animals mentioned earlier

3. Arrange and place 2 different animals on the table in an AB pattern eg.
zebra, tiger, zebra, tiger
4. Ask children Can you see of there is a pattern? Tell me what you think the
pattern is?
5. Arrange another AB pattern using another 2 animals eg. leopard, tiger,
leopard, tiger
6. Get the children to identify the pattern and continue to add to the pattern.
7. The teacher can ask questions like What do you think comes after the
tiger? Why did you put that animal there? Can you try to continue the
pattern?
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the AAB and ABB pattern.
9. Get the children to choose from any of the 3 animals- zebra, tiger, leopard
10. After choosing their animal, the children will have to wear a lanyard with
the animal printed on it.

11. Teacher will shout out a pattern eg. AB/AAB/ABB pattern and the
children would have to line up according to that pattern.
3. Closure:
1. Get the children to gather in a group.
2. Give them 2 different animals each. Get them to extend an ABB pattern as
a group.
3. Which animal comes first? Which animal comes next? Can you make
any other patterns?
