Trip to the valley of Tons

Mori is a small village in the beautiful Tons Valley of Uttarakhand. Just 400 kms away
from New Delhi, this place is a treat to eyes and lungs with its beauty and pleasant
fresh air. Its a delight to be here as it offers great photo opportunities and it is one
of the very few Himalayan hamlets in Uttarakhand which is not commercialized or
polluted. There are only a couple of more eco friendly camps other than MHE River
Camp, Tons.

The Journey

Me along with Chahat, Ponni, Sidharth and Chahat's dog Oliver started our dream
trip to Mori in Chahat's car, a Hyundai i10 grand. Starting at around 2345hrs we
took the Karnal - Ponta Sahib - Tuni route. The road was really nice till Ponta Sahib,
but after that it got so bad that we got an average speed of only 10km/hr till Tuni.
After Tuni the terrain became so beautiful that we started feeling as if we have
entered heaven escaping from hell. We reached MHE River Camp, Mori by around
1500 hrs after a long 15hrs drive.

MHE River Camp, Tons

MHE River Camp is a well maintained beautiful Camp on the banks of fast flowing
River Tons amidst a pine forest. The friendly and lively staff over there gave us
warm welcome with delicious late lunch. We relaxed for the day hearing the relaxing
roar of the river and soothing music of high pine trees.

Day of rejuvenation

Started our second day with hot tea and after breakfast trekked to a beautiful
natural pool nearby hidden in the forest. The short trek took us to the pool which
was so breathtakingly beautiful that we felt as we are in a dream or in a Bollywood
movie. The fresh, clean and chilling water gave us a rebirth from the life we were
living in the unbearably hot national capital. Oliver who has never left the city in his

four years of life got so excited that he couldn't stop himself from swimming along
with us. Lunch was ready by the time we reached back in the camp. After noon rain
clouds started gathering and the weather become colder. We decided to try our luck
in angling with locally modified line and hook with help of the river guides, soon to
realize how difficult it is to catch a fish.

Day of Action and Adventure

Third day started with most sort after extreme adventure in Tons - The White Water
Rafting. It was an exhilarating experience to scale those grad 3+ rapids. River Tons
is equally famous for its technicality and difficulty in rafting as it is for the fun,
excitement and adventure it provides. After noon we did sports climbing and
rappelling on a rock near the camp. Evening it was time for the village and the
temple visit. The temple is considered to be build by the Pandavas of Mahabharata
age. There are two metal balls each of more than 100kgs said to be used by Bhim to
play. It is said that a person with pure heart can lift the ball without much effort.
Anyways I could lift it only half way when our MHE guide Mr. Titu lifted it up till his
shoulder with very little effort. Way back to the camp we stopped at the last
remains of Asia's highest pine tree, which fell off in the 2007 storm.

Departure

Last day was in fact a relaxed day as we spend the whole time chit chatting with
camp staff and relaxing in the tent. By around 1500 hrs we started our drive back to
the hot tavern of Delhi with heavy heart and loads and loads of great memories.
This time we took the Mussoorie - Dehradun - Roorkee - New Delhi route which is
very scenic with well maintained road. We reached Delhi by 0500 hrs even after
having a 3 hrs stop in Mussourie.
