Black & White(TM) Readme File

-------------------------

A message from the Lionhead team (6am February 22nd 2001).

Thank you for buying Black & White. We spent three years writing this game and i
t is, we believe, unlike anything else you will have ever played.
It is everything we hoped it would be, and contains all the features we thought
a ground-breaking game should have.
We hope that you enjoy playing as much as we've enjoyed working on it. In fact,
we hope you enjoy it more than that because there have been times when it's push
ed us to our very limits.
Making this game, we found out who we really were. We hope that, as you play, yo
u'll find out who YOU really are.
Please do look at this readme document. It'll enhance your enjoyment of what we
hope is an incredible game to play.
Thank you.
All at Lionhead Studios Ltd.

---------------------
5. Gameplay additions
---------------------
Planting a tree away from any buildings will produce more trees. A green puff of
smoke confirms this action.
Watering any tree will encourage that tree to grow (except trees planted near yo
ur Temple). This is essential on later quests where wood is a premium.
When you have a villager in your hand, a house with the blue man symbol indicate
s his home.

Miracle Dispensers - You are able to build your own one-shot Miracle Dispensers
by combining six scaffolds created at your workshop. Once placed on the landscap
e, you can create one-shot Miracles by charging a Miracle in your hand and casti
ng it on the Dispenser. These can be moved from the Dispenser, placed anywhere a
nd saved for later use. You can cast any Miracle on a created Dispenser to creat
e a one-shot Miracle of that type. This is an especially useful tactic, as you
can create one shot Mega-blasts and place them in the Vortex for use in later la
nds.
-------------------
6. Controller Notes
-------------------
Control key additions:
----------------------
Please note: These will be overwritten if you assign these keys to other command
s in the ingame Options/controls menu.
R - repeat Miracle (same as using the repeat Gesture).
M - Miracle selection mode (same as using the Miracle Gesture).

Pressing & holding Ctrl + Shift will zoom you close into your hand. Releasing th
em will return you to your previous view.

TOUCHSENSE MOUSE:
Black & White fully supports the TouchSense technology from Immersion Corporatio
n.
This functionality is available to anyone who is using a mouse incorporating the
TouchSense technology and with the appropriate drivers installed.
TouchSense supplements the visual and audio feedback and gives players of Black
& White a more complete perceptual experience. In the virtual Black & White worl
d, having tactile feedback through the mouse will add realism to the whole game
experience while exploring the world and interacting with objects. Pulling up tr
ees, powering up Miracles, stroking or slapping your Creature together with many
other interactions all have their associated touch sensations which will add to
the overall immersive game experience. An extra challenge has been built into t
he game which is only available to those players using TouchSense technology. It
will only be possible to solve these challenges by use of TouchSense-enabled de
vices.

In Black & White, the goal has always been to produce an interface, which is ent
irely uncluttered by the traditional icons, menus and instead concentrate on the
natural real-world interactions with which everyone is familiar. As such, the B
lack & White hand is really to be viewed as an extension of your own hand. Havin
g touch as an additional feedback to this interface enhances this experience. Th
e tactile sensations do even more to create the illusion that the world behind t
he screen is a real world.

More details of this technology can be found at www.immersion.com.

For any users who already have this technology, be sure to check up that you hav
e the latest patches available for Black & White at www.immersion.com/coolsites
TouchSense Technology Support:
There are 3 levels of support to TouchSense that can be set in the Game.
These are available from the Immersion section on the Game Options screen:
Note: The Default support level is Normal.
Minimum: Just the special Immersion Challenge that has been built
into the game.
Normal: Key interactions for the game - with objects, Miracles a
nd your Creature.
Maximum: Interaction with all game objects and terrain features a
s the hand
passes over the land.
Note: All TouchSense effects have been balanced with the assumption that the "St
rength" on the TouchSense mouse control panel settings has been set to Maximum.
Different TouchSense tactile feedback mouse products may feel slightly different
, so you may want to make adjustments to the "Strength" setting to best suit you
r preferences.

It is possible to make your own customizations to the TouchSense sensations. How

ever, this operation is entirely unsupported and so it is advisable to make sure
you make backup copies of the original files. First you need to download Immers
ion Studio, the tool for editing touch effects. This can be found in the SDK sec
tion of the Immersion website: http://www.immersion.com/developer

Then there are 2 files which are used in Black & White. They can be found in .\L
ionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White\Data\Immersion
Tactile.ifr: This contains the TouchSense effects for tactile feedbac
k
mouse (e.g. Logitech iFeel Mouse).
FullFeedback.ifr: This contains the force feedback effects for a full forc
e feedback
mouse (e.g. Logitech Wingman Force Feedback Mouse).
For additional information on Immersion and other TouchSense-enabled devices ple
ase visit Immersion at www.immersion.com or www.immersion.com/entertainment.html
.
NB. Users of the Logitech iFeel MouseMan mouse must ensure that they set the mid
dle button activated by pressing the wheel to be the same as the normal middle b
utton action. You can do this by selecting "Mouse" from the control panel and th
en the "Buttons" tab. The default setting of this during installation is WebWhee
l which will interfere with the correct operation of Black & White.

-------------------------------------------------------------
7. How to create your own player symbols and Creature tattoos
-------------------------------------------------------------
Black & White comes with 16 pre-defined player symbols/Creature tattoos. The sam
e images are used for both. You can replace any of these images with your own. T
o do so, place a 64x64 greyscale .bmp image (8-bit) called symboln.bmp (where n
is a number from 1 to 16) in your profile directory (default directory will be c
:\program files\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White\profiles\yourname\ - where yo
urname is the name of the profile you created). The player logo/Creature tattoo
will then be available to select in the usual ways.
To swap back to the default logos/tattoos, simply delete the image files you cre
ated.

Tip: Design your logos on a black background for best results.

-----------------------------------------
8. Network & Out of Sync Recovery Feature
-----------------------------------------
Online Requirements
Internet features require TCP/IP Internet connection at 56Kbps or faster, or Int
ernet access via LAN (Local Area Network).
Network Problems
Note to AOL® users: If you use AOL or any other system that doesn't use Windows
dial-up networking, you will need to manually connect to the internet before run
ning the game if you want to use any of the online aspects.
To force Black & White into thinking that there is an OPEN & READY internet conn

1. Right mouse click on the runBlack.exe file - the default location for this sh
ould be C:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White - and select the Cre
ate Shortcut option.
2. Right mouse click on the Shortcut to runBlack.exe file and select the Propert
ies option.
3. In the box labeled Target type in the following command at the end of the pat
h description:

Multiplayer - Out Of Synchronization Recovery Feature

-----------------------------------------------------
If a game goes Out Of Sync, data is transferred to all client machines for an Ou
t Of Sync restart (This may take a few seconds, dependant on the number of peopl
e in the game). This feature can be used as follows:

1. LAN
When waiting for a person to join you in an out-of-sync game, have the "Restore
Out Of Sync" checkbox turned on. The game will then be in "Out Of Sync" restore
mode. You will not be able to change the map (It will be the same map as the Out
Of Sync game). You will only be able to change teams and start the game.

2. Internet
When creating a channel, have the "Restore Out Of Sync" checkbox turned on (this
will only be visible if you have an Out Of Sync restore available).
Only people with the Out Of Sync restore data, sent around when the game went Ou
t Of Sync, will be able to join you and replay the game. You can change the team
s/clans to how they were in the previous session manually.
Note that Out Of Sync Restore can only be used for a multiplayer game, which is
created straight after the game that went Out Of Sync. If another multiplayer ga
me is played in the meantime, it is not possible to restore the previous game.

---------------------
9. Creature Homepages
---------------------
Black & White allows you to publish webpages containing all the information abou
t your Creature. This information is continuously updated by the game and stored
on your local machine.
You can upload your pages for other people to view by using the CreatureUpload.e
xe application. These Creature pages are hosted as part of the bwgame Creature P
age hosting service (www.bwGame.com) and community pages.
There is an external application called "CreatureUpload.exe" (the default direct
ory for this will be c:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White\), whic
h allows you to upload your Creature info..
To use this service, you MUST be registered at www.bwgame.com (and therefore hav
e a username and user password). In addition, you must have played at least once
over the Internet or entered your registration details into the "over the Inter
net user details" dialog box in Black & White. You MUST also have a Creature.

After successfully uploading you can view your Creature page at:
http://www.YOURREGISTRATIONNAME.bwcreatures.com
or http://www.bwcreatures.com/YOURREGISTRATIONNAME
Where YOURREGISTRATIONNAME is the name you chose when registering online.

The images and information about your Creature are also stored on your hard disk
. You can access this information by opening the "html directory" in your profil
e directory (.\Profiles\Myregistrationname\html) . This html page is template ba
sed, so you may change it. This does not change your Creature data however.
It is a normal HTML file with same special keywords which gets parsed whilst cre
ating the Creature html file. So anybody with basic HTML skills can create their
own template file.
Please note: You cannot upload this offline version to the bwgame Creature pages
.
If you want to upload the offline generated Creature HTML page to your own webpa
ges, using the default/shipped template file, you may have to change the path of
the images. This can be done at the top of the Creatures html page (source of f
ile).

-------------------------------------------------
10. Naming your Villagers from your email program
-------------------------------------------------
Black & White can import names from your computer's email contact list and use t
hese as names for your Villagers. Additionally, Black & White can retrieve the S
ubject & From Field from your emails and notify you in-game that you have receiv
ed an email from any of your villager contact names. Additionally, if you are ru
nning Black & White and receive an email from a new contact, this name will be a
ssigned to a Villager, who will notify you of the email.
Black & White supports Microsoft Outlook(TM) or any POP3 compatible Mailbox. It
does NOT support Microsoft Outlook Express(TM).
To activate the email feature, you need to run the Black & White Setup applicati
on, click on the email settings button and select your player profile from the d
rop-down list.

Check the first box (check for Internet email) to activate this email feature.
Check the second box if you are using Microsoft Outlook. If you are using a POP3
mail system, leave this box unchecked and fill out your POP3 server settings in
the fields below.
This feature is only operational in the single player game and also you need to
have done the following:
1. You have registered at www.bwgame.com site
2. You have gone into the Online Game - Find Games on the internet and entered y
our username and password at least once.

Email Questions and Answers:

Q:I received a mail while playing Black & White but I can't see a Villager named
after the sender.
A: Black & White stores the sender's name in your personal B&W address book (add
ressbook.lhe). The sender's name will be assigned to a Villager the next time yo
u play the game. Black & White DOES NOT create new villagers based on the sender
's name as soon as you get an email from a person who is not already in your con
tact list. Instead a Villager will inform you that you have received new mail.
Q: How many villagers will be named from my address book?
A: At least one. A random number of villagers will be named from your address bo
ok. The names are randomly selected from your address book. You might not recogn
ize some named villagers in Black & White. These may be members of the Lionhead
development team.

Q: I've received a mail but it didn't appear in Black & White. I've checked ever
ything, the settings are all right, the connection is there, but nothing shows u
p.

A: Black & White makes decisions about whether it should display a mail or not.
A lot of Internet users have "Leave-Mail-On-Server" feature turned on in their e
mail programs. Therefore Black & White needs to check the time on the mails on a
POP3 account or in Outlook (which are marked as readable). Otherwise every mail
, including any old mails on your mail account would show up EVERY TIME you run
Black & White. Black & White saves its startup time, so it can compare the time
values of the mails with its own startup time. If Black & White cannot find out
the correct time of a mail (due mail header problems or poor configuration of th
e mail servers), it will not show up the mail. Also, non-standard time zone entr
ies in the mails that don't allow Black & White to find out how "old" a mail is
will be denied. Most mail servers and mail programs deliver a correct mail heade
r & mail format, however.
Q:I could hear my Outlook mail sound but then it took ages before the mail showe
d up in the game.
A: Black & White uses the direct Outlook API to access your Outlook. So Black &
White has to scan all the folders that contain new mails to find out which ones
are new and to get their subject and names fields.
Depending on the amount of mails you have in your folders, it can take some time
. Large folders can take up to several minutes to scan.

Q: I sometimes have to wait a couple of minutes until Black & White starts to sh
ow any received mails, although I have mails in the background.
A: On startup Black & White stores the actual time to have a reference time for
showing mails or ignoring them. Everything BEFORE this time value will NOT be sh
own. Everything AFTER this value will make it into the game.
Be sure that you have correct date/time settings on your computer.

Q: I have tried everything; the email feature still does not work with my POP3 m
ail program.
A: The mail server you're using may not be using the standard protocols.
Q: I'm running Outlook in "Groupware mode" - for example using Microsoft Exchang
e Server. But the contact names or email notification doesn't work.
A: If you run Outlook in "Groupware" mode it may not give Black & White the perm
issions to read out the contact names and / or checking mails. This is a limitat
ion with Outlook running in the mode. The supported mode needs to be "Internet O
nly". You can select this by changing the Mail Delivery Support in the Options M
enu of Outlook. NOTE: You should not change the method of mail delivery if you'r
e using Outlook with any Groupmail software like Microsoft Exchange Server.
