You can find sp3 bonding when a carbon has 4 single bonds. You can find sp2 bond
ing when carbon has a ONE double bond. You can find sp bonding when carbon has T
WO DOUBLE bonds or ONE TRIPLE bond. These orbitals form because it allows carbon
to bond easier with less repulsion between electrons in each of the orbitals an
d it allows carbon to fulfill its electron/bonding requirements. Basically, Carb
on's orbitals change shape to keep itself "happy."
"sp3"--> 4 e- heavy groups/areas
O=C=O : C is sp hybridized: only 2 groups!
NH3 is sp3 hybridized-- 3 N-H, and the lone pair.
