BIOTEMP lled transformers. Safer and more

environmentally friendly.

ABBs BIOTEMP lled transformers use a natural ester-based uid derived from
renewable vegetable oil, as the insulation medium. This oil is 99 percent biodegrad able, has a high temperature stability and water saturation limit, superior re resist ance and excellent dielectric characteristics. BIOTEMP offers an efcient, reliable,
safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional transformer
insulation media. www.abb.com/transformers

The short-time mechanical current rating

shall be the rms value of the ac component of a displaced (asymmetrical)

the secondary winding short-circuited.
Capable of withstanding shall be
interpreted to mean that if subjected to
this duty, the current transformer shall

current transformer is the rms symmetrical

primary current that can be carried for 1

s with the secondary winding shortcircuited without exceeding in any winding the limiting temperature. The
temperature of a conductor in the windings of a current transformer shall be
determined from calculation using methods specied in 8.6.2.
1

8.6.2.
The limiting temperature shall be 250 C
for copper conductor or 200 C for EC
aluminum conductor. A maximum
temperature of 250 C shall be allowed
for aluminum alloys that have resistance
to annealing properties at 250 C equivalent to EC aluminum at 200 C, or for
applications of EC aluminum where the
characteristics of the fully annealed
material satisfy the mechanical requirements.

If the 1 s rating is not dependent on core

saturation (see 8.6.3), the short-time
thermal current rating for any time up to
5 s may be determined from the 1 s
rating by dividing the current for 1 s by
the square root of the specied number
of seconds. For example, the 3 s thermal
current rating is equal to the 1 s current
rating divided by the square root of 3, or
58% of the one second rating. This calculation includes the assumption that the
primary current is symmetrical during the
time interval.

Switchgear and Control Handbook, 2nd Edition,
Robert W. Smeaton, 1987, Aluminum Wire
Chapter 8: Installation and Service Consideration, Kenneth
L. Paape (Consulting Engineer, Westinghouse Electric), p.
21
Aluminum Wire. Industrial switchgear and control are
usually provided with terminals for the installer to use in
wiring. These terminals may not be used with aluminum
wire unless the terminals are marked AL. Aluminum wire
requires more preparatory steps for proper installation
than does copper to remove and penetrate the
aluminum oxide (a high-resistance material) which forms
as soon as aluminum is exposed to air. Special
compounds in the form of greases are available to
prevent or penetrate the aluminum oxide. Crimp-type
lugs provide more reliable termination for aluminum wire
than do pressure wire connectors or lugs with setscrews.
With screw-type terminals the aluminum creeps or ows
under mechanical pressure, vibration, and the expansion
and contraction caused by heating and cooling. In the
matter of a few days, this creep creates a joint which is
not as tight as it was originally unless some form of
continuing pressure (such as from a conical washer) is
provided. Once a high-resistance joint is created, it is
rapidly self-expanding, creating more aluminum oxide,
which creates more heat, which creates more aluminum
oxide, etc., until the device fails.
Aluminum wire properly installed has proved to be
satisfactory for distribution equipment applications,
whereas to date, aluminum wire has produced a
disproportionate number of termination problems in
control equipment for the amount of aluminum wire
used, probably for one or more of the following reasons:
1. The initial installation was improper andlor joint
maintenance was nonexistent.

2. Control equipment cycles on and off many more

times per day than does distribution equipment.
3. Control equipment carries current closer to its
maximum rating more often than does distribution
equipment.
4. The temperature excursion of the terminals from
no-load to full-load conditions is greater for control
equipment than for distribution equipment,
(Industrial-control equipment is designed to standards
which permit a 50C or 65 C temperature rise at eld
wiring terminals, and distribution equipment is
designed to standards which permit only a 30 C
temperature rise.)
5. Control equipment is more apt to be mounted where
it is exposed to vibration than is distribution
equipment.
The potential material cost savings of aluminum wire
applied to industrial-control equipment should be
weighed against the cost of obtaining proper termination
and installation, additional maintenance, and the
performance to date.
Aluminum alloys containing a small amount of iron have
been developed which improve ductility and greatly
reduce the tendency to creep and yet match the
resistivity of other aluminum alloys used for wire. As a
greater percentage of aluminum wire is manufactured
from the alloys containing iron, termination problems
related to creep can be expected to be correspondingly
reduced.
