Geniusday
By: Hannah Frederick and Katharine
Peck
On early release this week, the
students have had the privilege of
genius day. Genius day is when the
students get to choose what classes
they would like to take. The classes
can be vastly differentfromonesthe
teachersusuallyteachbutneedtobe
somethingthestudentswillenjoy.
It's very cool to be able to see what
the teachers interests are besides
besides school. Throughout the day
the students learned about the
teacher's talents. Mr. Jones taught
Dream vacation, Mr. Turner
educated students about music and
music appreciation, Ms. Edwards
informed them about barre
exercises, and Ms. Wildhaber taught
a class called movie plots. After
interviewing a few students about
how they liked genius day, we found
that most students thought genius
day was a good idea but they wish
they knew more about the class
before the signed up. Then when
interviewing teachers with a similar
set of questions, the vast majority
thought that it was a good idea and
they loved theirclassessomuchthat
they would not change them or
anythingabouttheday.Studentsand

Quakes, drifting, explosions and
more
By:KatharinePeck
Early in the week students got a
jump start with a ive part
assignment on continental drift.
They needed 100% in order to
move on to the next part. If not
inished by the end of their irst
period of science they would
continue during the block days.
Students then completed another
assignment
similar

to the one in the beginning but

three parts about earthquakesand
volcanoes! Students then moved
on tothe irstprojectofnextweek.
You will hear more about this in
next week's newsletter. Since the
week was shortened by MLK Jr.
Day and genius day this was all
they could it but next week will
similarly be full of fun and
contagiouslyexciting.

This week Mr. Turners social studies

class they started the achievements
unit. The students took a pretest tosee
how much they knew about the new
unit. They also did a re lection on last
week's challenge whichwastomakean
Egyptian shaduf. They had to see who
could get the most water out of the
river. The students realized how
important it is to listen and to work
together as a team. They also worked
on their UN Global Goals, which are
makinggreatprogress.Mr.Turnersays
I'm very excited to see the positive
impact our students will have on the
community.

TextstructureinELAwithMs.
Edwards
By:CalvinFransson

At the beginning of this week

students started learning about text
structure. There are 5 types of
structures that the students have been
researching. Descriptive, cause and
effect,
problem
and
solution,
chronological, and sequencing. Also in
Ms. Edwards class, students have been
working on their CBL (challenged
basedlearning)belongingchallenge.

Whether it's trying to help new

people in your neighborhood feel at
home, or going to your old school
and helping out, every student has
come up with a plan to help people
intheircommunitybelong.

Multistepproblems
By:KatharinePeck
At the beginning of this week
students put together a domino like
puzzle, connecting word problems
with the equations that it. If they
completed it correctly it would look
slightly like the outline of a ire
hydrant! After completion students
moved on to a new lesson about
multiple step equations combining
everything they have learned so far.
