About Mahabaleshwar
Mahabaleshwar is both a city and a municipal council in the Satara district in the state of
Maharashtra. It is located in the Western Ghats range of India, which spreads from north to
south along the Deccan Plateau. The hill station is at an elevation of 1,353 metres above sea
level.

Mahabaleshwar lies 285 km south-west of Mumbai and is bound by valleys on all sides. It is a
plateau measuring an area of 150 square kilometres.
Mahabaleshwar constitutes three villages Malcolm Peth, Old Kshetra Mahabaleshwar and
some part of the Shindola village. The river Krishna originates from the mouth of the legendary
statue of a cow in the temple of Mahadev situated in Old Mahabaleshwar and flows across
Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Four other rivers also flow from the mouth of the
cow, before they merge into the Krishna; these are Koyana, Venna (Veni), Savitri and Gayatri.
The destination was ruled by various dynasties including the Mauryas, Chalukyas,
Rashtrakutas, Adil Shahi, Shilahar, Marathas, Peshwas and Satavahanas. The history of
Mahabaleshwar dates back to 1215, when king Singhan of Deogiri visited Old Mahabaleshwar.
A temple and a water tank were constructed by him at the source of the Krishna. This area was
invaded by a Brahmin dynasty in 1350.
In the 16th century, the Maratha family of Chandarao ruled over the city. Later, in the 17th
century, Jaoli and Mahabaleshwar were taken over by Shivaji Maharaj, who constructed the
Pratapgad Fort in 1656. The city also witnessed the imprints of the British, who included the
destination in the territory of the Raja of Satara in 1819.
Getting around Mahabaleshwar is not a problem for tourists. Travellers can hire a taxi or board
a bus to explore the city and its attractions. Mahabaleshwar is famous for strawberries and
mulberries. Tourists can enjoy 'strawberries with cream' from January to February and
'mulberries with cream' from April to May. Also, strawberry milkshake and vada pav made here
is a must-try for tourists. The city also produces fresh jams and marmalades, which can be
bought. Tourists can also buy fresh honey from the various bee farms in the city.
The moderate climate of Mahabaleshwar makes it destination tourists can visit any time of the
year.

"This is a not to be missed farm. I have never been to a better and elaborate farm before. There
is vertical cultivation of strawberries here. A wide variety of vegetables are grown in a very
organized way. They have yellow squash, lolo salad leaves, lettuce, different types of
cabbages, cauliflower, radish, mint, basil and others. A well cared farm worth a visit. We were
shown around by the owner's daughter, Sanam Nalband. She explained and showed around
the varieties grown. The family is very hospitable and generous. We picked up some
vegetables which were cleanly packed in plastic wrap. She also treated to strawberry and
mulberry juice which was delicious. We also tried the strawberry and mulberry with cream which
was awesome and the best ever tasted. Living in a city makes this is a rare experience. So, it's
ok to skip other points of interest but not this farm. It is very near to Ramsukh Resort and close
to old Mahabaleshwar Temple. Also noticed 2 new eateries. Vithal Kamat's at Mahabaleshwar
Market and another of the same next to Mala's. Poonam Hotel in the market area too has been
renovated with fast food chat items in the outer area. All veg. Didn't get a chance to try any but

Surprisingly awesome and favourite Hill Station Destination in India

"A two day trip to Mahabaleshwar was unforgettable experience. Biking on zig-zag hilly roads
made the trip more exciting. While going Mahabaleshwar plan for at-least 2 days as the place is
having more than 15 viewpoints. We started our trip with boating in venna lake. Most exciting
viewpoints are Arthur's seat, Elephant point, Kate's point, Wilson point etc. Keep aware of
monkeys at kat's point as they are simply cute. If you simply love the heights then must go for it.
Monsoon season will be best for going there. Mahabaleshwar is 180km from Pune.
Mahableshwar is also having Panch-Ganga Mandir - origin of 5 rivers. Well managed and clean
market in Mahableshwar is best for purchasing jam, jelly and sweets. Pratap Garh Fort of Sivaji
Maharaj about 30km from Mahableshwar situated on a hill is also a awesome place to visit.
Pratapgarh fort is having old shooting equipments of sivaji maharaj and temples. On coming
back in evening we visited Sunset point in Mahabaleshwar which made our trip much

"Mahabaleshwar is known for its scenic beauty and religious temples. The weather here is
generally cool and calm during September month which makes it ideal place to visit during this
time. There are several peak points from where you can witness the krishna river valley. The
Panchganaga temple and Mahabaleshwar temples are good places to visit also the
Mahabaleshwar market is a happening place to visit during the evening time for some
shopping. Also Mapro is very famous with all its products available everywhere in
Mahabaleshwar market.
