Room Arrangement Objectives 1. To get close to the students. 2. To do away with barriers to your movement. 3. To think in terms of walkways. Note: What is important is not where the furniture is, but rather where it is no. Guidelines 1. Twoaisles back to front. 2. Three to four aisles side to side, 3. Take barriers out of the front of the room. 4, Walkways need to be generous. While we are trying to save space to keep students closer to you, we are not going to do it by sacrificing the teachers’ thighs or by having them tripping over sneakers. Use some of the space you saved removing barriers to make your walkways more generous, Move furniture next to the walls for more walkway space ~ you will want to stay in the interior, (Unless you are lucky enough to have chalkboards and want students to have access to them.) 5, Leave nothing to chance. Physically sit in each desk and stretch your legs to check that you have space to walk. Assign seats and let them know that you may change assignment at any time. Note: You own the room and the furniture in it. It is your decision and you have the right to change your mind anytime. Positive Classroom Instruction Interior Loop [sia} oO oooo ss oy SS ‘The above diagram shows the most common set up of the Interior Loop with Ears. The min design is for 32 students. Realistically, you are often given more than 32 students, therefore, four extra desks are drawn in at the back of the room. The extension of the walkway to those chairs creates the ears, Note: The desks for the additional students are not placed behind the last central group of four. Instead, we put them directly at the end of the “ears” pathway. They oO are then psychologically closer as the teacher moves around the loop and out to the Q ends. They are represented here by the dark boxes. Interior Loop Variation The above diagram is one variation of the Interior Loop with Ears. It is designed with a cooperative learning format in mind. The chalkboard may be at the top of the diagram ~ or on the right hand side, Positive Classroom Instruction Other Options Large Group Options § x 2 & & oo &% & 2 SS ee & & we Se RH So > S&S 2 b 5 GB oh BBB G & fd | 5 q & > Small Group Instruction Options 8 8 = 7 a 3 8 g ale % és Positive Classroom Instruction Design Your Room Large Group Positive Classroom Instruction Small Group Positive Classroom instruction
