Exercise 01: File Management and QGIS Software Download and

Installation

Purpose: To learn how to organize files in folders and how to download and install
QGIS software in preparation for accomplishing the workshop exercises.

A. File Management

Lets try to make an orderly file management system.

In your Desktop window, right-click your mouse. Click New > Folder

Name the folder as SLSU_2015.

Inside it, create another folder and name it as MarineBio_GISTrng. Under this
folder, create the following folders: MYDATA, OUTPUT, SOFTWARE, and
TRNG_MATLS.

Next, create the sub-folders, as illustrated below:

We will be using the folders that we created above to store our GIS datasets and
where to get them for our exercises.

B. Software Download and Installation (Copy the QGIS software from Instructor if
Internet is very slow or unavailable.)

Note: First, uninstall from your computer any installed older version of QGIS.

For the duration of the workshop we will use QGIS (aka Quantum GIS) as our main
GIS software. We may use other GIS software as the need arises.

Go to http://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html

QGIS 2.6 is the latest version. You may use this. However, lets use version QGIS
2.4, which can be found here: http://qgis.org/downloads/

Download QGIS-OSGeo4W-2.4.0-1-Setup-x86.exe or QGIS-OSGeo4W-2.4.0-1-Setupx86_64.exe depending on whether your computer is 32 or 64-bit.

Save it in C:\.....\Desktop\SLSU_2015\MarineBio_GISTrng\SOFTWARE\QGIS

Click the appropriate file to install QGIS 2.4.

Once installed, click on QGIS Desktop icon to open the program.

Open some GIS datasets on Southern Leyte.

Let your cursor hover over the tools to see the function of each tool.

Click on QGIS Browser to open it.

Close QGIS. [Click Project in Menu Bar, then click Exit QGIS to close the QGIS
program.]

Close QGIS Browser.

Download the free WPS Office, a software similar to MS Office, from

www.wps.com/windows/. Click Download Now.

Save the file wps_office_2014_4674_22.105 in

C:\.....\Desktop\SLSU_2015\MarineBio_GISTrng\SOFTWARE\KingSoft_Office
Install the software.
