veryeasyforanybodytocopytheworkfromtheinternet.Buttechnologyalsohavemadeit
veryeasytodetectcasesofplagiarisminanyformofdocumentsubmittedtoit.
Introduction
Muchhasbeenwrittenonthethemeofplagiarismbystudents,particularlyinthe
contextofNorthAmericanexperience.Thispaperreviewsthatliteratureinorderto
discoverwhatlessonsitholdsforinstitutionalpolicyandpracticewithininstitutions
ofhighereducationintheUK.
Aswellasbeingtheproblemthatwontgoaway(Paldy,1996),plagiarismisa
problemthatisgrowingbigger.Thereismountingevidencethatstudentcheatingin
general,andplagiarisminparticular,arebecomingmorecommonandmore
widespread,encouragingAlschulerandBlimling(1995)tospeakofepidemic
cheating.Thisevidenceismultidimensional,comingfrommanycountries,including
theUSA(White,1993),theUK(Ashworth&Bannister,1997),SouthernAfrica
(Weeks,2001)andand

Theemphasisinthispaperisonthecausesandconsequencesofstudentplagiarism.
Whilstthepaperalsoaddressessomeaspectsofdesigningappropriatecoping
strategiesfordealingwiththem,thisisverymuchasecondarythemehere.Itis,
therefore,notbyaccidentthatthefocusisprimarilyonthestudentperspectiveand
experience.Thisisnottodenytheimportantroleplayedbyacademicstaffandthe
relevanceofparticularacademictraditions,forexampleinsettingparticulartypesof
assignmentwhichmightbeeasiertoplagiariseorwherethetemptationstoplagiarise
mightbestrongerorinprivilegingtheabilitytoreproduceexistingknowledgeabove
originalityinstudentwriting,whichmeritdetailedtreatmentelsewhere.
