Abstract: Symmetry is a crucial concept in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Its definition is also applicable to
art, music, architecture and innumerable other patterns designed by nature, in both animate and inanimate forms. In modern
physics, however, symmetry may be the most crucial concept of all. Fundamental symmetry principles dictate the basic laws
of physics, control the structure of matter and define the fundamental forces in nature.
Yet a sampling of the crucial role of symmetry in physics for the beginning students, is at odds with the practice of complete
omission of this beautiful and fundamental topic which is missing not only from the high-school curriculum, but also from
the standard first year university, calculus based, physics courses.
The profound relevance of symmetry principles in the understanding of nature is largely a 20th century revelation, beginning
with Einsteins view of physics. The absence of symmetry discourses in our teaching of physics today represents a throw
back to a 19th century perspective which seems to permeate the new curriculum.
We believe that students are attracted to and motivated by the modern sexy highly visible end-products of modern physics,
e.g. semiconductors, lasers, superconductors, superfluids, the formation of galaxies, big-bang, black holes, dark matter,
quarks and superstrings.

What follows is a description of a high-school module that introduces the key ideas of symmetry which in many examples,
tie physics to astrophysics, biology and chemistry. This involves no calculus but a basic knowledge of geometry and highschool algebra( with complex numbers and trigonometry) is prerequisite . This also attempts to reveal some of the modern
thinking in a conversational way.
Keywords: symmetry, conservation law, Newtons law, fermion, boson.
