Problem 1 (10 min)

The following heat engines produce power of 95000 kW. Determine in each case the rates at
which heat is absorbed from the hot reservoir and discarded to the cold reservoir.
a) A Carnot engine operates between heat reservoirs at 750 K and 300 K.
b) A practical engine operates between the same heat reservoirs but with a thermal efficiency
of 0.35.
Problem 2 (20 min)
A rigid vessel of 0.06 m3 volume contains an ideal gas (CV=2.5 R) at 500 K and 1 bar. If heat in
the amount of 15 000 J is transferred to the gas, determine its entropy change in J/K.
(Assume a constant volume process)
Problem 3 (15 min)
For a steady-flow process at approximately atmospheric pressure, what is the entropy change for
SO2 gas when an amount of 10 mol is heated from 200 to 1100 C?
(For SO2, the constants used in the evaluation of heat capacity change with temperature are:
A=5.699; B *10+03 = 0.801; C*10+06 = 0; D*10-05 = -1.015)
Problem 4 (25 min)
Water at 200 kPa and 10 C enters a mixing chamber at a rate of 135 kg/min where it is mixed
steadily with steam entering at 200 kPa and 150 C. The mixture leaves the chamber at 200 kPa
and 55 C, and heat is lost to the surrounding air at 20 C at a rate of 180 kJ/min. Neglecting the
changes in potential and kinetic energies and assuming constant heat capacity, determine the rate
of entropy generation during this process. (Cp = 4.18 kJ/kg.K).
