Georgia has five regions. This includes the mountains, piedmont, coastal plain, swamp/marsh,
and the Atlantic Ocean.
Mountains have the highest elevation of all the habitat areas. You will find many evergreen trees
and oak trees in this habitat.
The piedmont is a hilly region where you will find hickory trees, dogwood trees, and river
valleys. You will also find animals such as the spotted salamander and white tailed deer in this
region.
Freshwater habitats include lakes, rivers, and streams. In this habitat you can find things such as
rainbow trout and bass but not dolphins.
The coastal plain habitat is low and flat with few trees. This habitat includes the dunes at the
beach. The dunes are dry sandy soil with very few plants that grow there.
The oceans salt water is home to many living things. This would include the dolphin and the star
fish just to name a few.
The wetlands habitat is home to animals such as the heron. The heron has adapted to this type of
area by having long legs to walk in the water. Another animal that can ONLY be found in this
habitat in Georgia is the alligator.
There are parts of a habitat that are non-living such as the water, air, and rocks. Things such as
plants, insects, fish, birds, etc are living things.
Think about what would happen to some animals in a specific habitat if the plants in that same
habitat died out... They would probably die as well because they no longer have the plants as
food, camouflage, or a home. Animals have to have plenty of food and water to be able to
survive. For an example, if a hurricane hit a forest area, many trees would be blown down and
destroyed. This would result in many animals in this area losing their homes. They would either
have to find another home or would die out.
