Homework - 1 - Solutions

This document contains information for homework assignment 1 for the course CE 341 Soil Mechanics taught by Professor Esmaili at NJIT in Fall 2016. It includes 3 problems dealing with grain size analysis, hydrometer testing, and liquid and plastic limit testing of soils. The first problem involves graphing grain size distribution curves and classifying soils by percent composition using MIT, AASHTO, and USCS systems. The second problem calculates the particle diameter from hydrometer test results. The third problem involves determining the liquid limit, plasticity index, and liquidity index from liquid and plastic limit test data.

1. The following are the results of a sieve and hydrometer analysis.

a.
b.
c.
d.

Draw the grain-size distribution curve.

Determine the percentages of gravel, sand, silt and clay according to MIT system.
Repeat part b according to the AASHTO system.
Repeat part b according to USCS.

Solution:

b)
Percent passing 2 mm = 100
Percent passing 0.06 mm = 73
Percent passing 0.002 mm = 9

GRAVEL: 100 100 = 0%

SAND: 100 73 = 27%
SILT: 73 9 = 64%
CLAY: 9 0 = 9%

c)
Percent passing 2 mm = 100
GRAVEL: 100 100 = 0%
Percent passing 0.075 mm = 80 SAND: 100 80 = 20%
Percent passing 0.002 mm = 9
SILT: 80 9 = 71%
CLAY: 9 0 = 9%
d)
Percent passing 4.75 mm = 100 GRAVEL: 100 100 = 0%
Percent passing 0.075 mm = 80 SAND: 100 80 = 20%
CLAY + SILT: 80 0 = 80%

2. A hydrometer test has the following result: = 2.75, temperature of water = 23C, and
L = 12.8 cm at 100 min after the start of sedimentation. What is the diameter D of the
smallest-size particles that have settled beyond the zone of the measurement at that time
(that is t = 100 min)?
Solution:
Gs = 2.75; temperature = 23C; time = 100 min; L = 12.8 cm
()
() =
(min)
Using Table 2.6 in textbook, for Gs = 2.75 and temperature = 23C, K= 0.01279

12.8
= 0.01279
= 0.0046

3. Results from liquid and plastic limit tests conducted on a soil are given below.
Liquid limit tests:

Plastic limit tests: PL= 19.1%

a. Draw the flow curve and obtain the liquid limit.
b. What is the plasticity index of the soil.
c. Determine the liquidity index of the soil if = 21%.
Solution:
a)

From the plot, at N=25, is 23.6%. therefore, LL=23.6.

b) PI = LL PL = 23.6 19.1 = 4.5
c) =

2119.1
23.619.1

= 0.422
