| Classification of Soils and Soil-Aggregate Mixtures for Highway Construction Purposes AASHTO Designatio! M 145-91 (2004) 1. SCOPE 14. ‘This recommended practice describes a procedure for classifying soils into seven groups based on laboratory determination of particle-size distribution, liquid limit, nd plasticity index. Evaluation of soils within each group is made by means of a “group index,” which is a value calculated from an empirical formula. The group classification, including group index should be useful in determining the relative quality of the soil material for use in earthwork structures, particularly embankments, subgrades, subbases, and bases. However, forthe detailed design of important structures additional data concerning strength or performance characteristics of the soil under field conditions will usually be required. 1.2. ‘The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. CLASSIFICATION 34. ‘The classification is made by using the test limits and group index values shown in Table 1. Ifa ‘ore detailed classification is desired, a further subdivision of the groups shown in Table 1 may bbe made. An example of the classification with such subgroups as shown in Table | may be made. ‘An example of the classification with such subgroups is shown in Table 2. The liquid limit and plasticity index ranges for the A-4, A-5, A-6, and A-7 soil groups are shown graphically in Figure 2 TS-1b M 145-1 ‘AASHTO ‘AASHTO (candy 295) 0 77 we sa drstgn 9-1 09pm ANSEF SURETY TS 200 ks UBF JOH HIE ee ove PSD oF ATONE apenas 5 Har TENS, aig sews pans pan ani TB 0 HES ‘pase | poBe pa aug | “smouiey us sys yunsuoo yogis 30 Sod Les arn | aT wang [aT | wT] wor | OT | aN cr Sepa ARNE wun iy | sew oP saw oy | on tp | xem oy | om ry | xouroy | — - (ov ON) wu sco Bussed ure Jo sonstnIezE4) THUGE | wDE | uRNSE | aoe | MMSE | muse | TUTE | HRUrSe | mm OT | Kem se [Mew ST (oe oN) eT ST = = f= fH fH fH fH fm J atts | somos | euro = =f -— f=} =] — fH fH J a fm J meres oEv | ov | sv | ev [eev[oev | sev [ee [ev [ory] ery SLY vwonpaysse dias) aa wy Ty (ui 1 Buysse S597] 10 u9DIEg Se) sleuaneyy rene se1Q e209) M 145-2 ‘SaunnWY aveaaiy-[L0§ pur sos Jo wonvot foe age sn} 231 By ‘ey 00 £- 3 founds arp ep eso MoU SH Yo, a AooH HY 089 Cy JO BUTE HL, 0D OTTO Speiign se Tae BND OT Fi a smo apa sew op — (op: 9N) une sz¥0 Based vouoey so sonsunrest) TE aE Tew Or Wes TOOT ONT SL i = ms sewos (F299 ww SoH - = - = - - ON) wa 992 sed aosad “asm 0018 LY Ww ; rv ev EV SseID doy (aa cj Bunsseq weaved G¢ WELL OW) (ui S Husseq S507] 30 1HSSIA SE) "woweay SSH THRUSH STOUR ABIDES sTeUayE WN JejNULIO ‘pte S[19§ JO HOHWOY!SSEII—F BIGEL TSb 3.2, Classification Procedure—With required test data available, proceed from left to right in Table 1 Peele 2 and the correct group will be found by process of elimination. DEFINITIONS OF GRAVEL, SAND, AND SILT-CLAY ‘The terms “gravel,” “coarse sand,” and “silt-lay,” as determinable from the minimum test data required inthis classification arrangement and as used in subsequent word descriptions, are defined as follows:
