(1) A line charge with linear charge density is placed parallel to conducting cylinder of radius
a held at fixed voltage V, the distance of the charge from the axis of the cylinder is d (d>a),
the axis of a such that the potential vanishes at infinity. Find the magnitude and position of the
image charge(s)
(2) Two similar charges are placed at 2d distance apart. Find approximately, the minimum
radius a of a grounded conducting sphere placed midway between them that would neutralize
their mutual repulsion.
What would be the force on each of the two charges if the same sphere now charged to a
potential V0.
(3) Two point charges (q and -q) are placed at a distance d1 and d2 from the center of an
uncharged insulated conducting sphere of radius a as shown in figure below.

(i) Calculate the potential at very large distance (r) from the center of the sphere (
).
(ii) In the limit
, the two charges outside
is approximated as dipole of dipole moment P. Calculate the approximate potential in terms of
P in the mentioned limiting case.
(4) An insulated, spherical, conducting shell of radius a is in a uniform electric field E0. If the
sphere is cut into two hemispheres by a plane perpendicular to the field, find the force required to
prevent the hemispheres from separating
(i) if the shell is uncharged;
(ii) if the total charge on the shell is Q.
