CONFLICT RESOLUTION METHOD

COLLABORATION
This is an assertive and cooperative means of conflict resolution that results
in a win-win solution. In collaboration, all parties set aside their original goals and
works together to establish priority common goal. In doing so, all parties accept
mutual responsibility for reaching the goal. Although it is very difficult for people to
set aside their original goals, collaboration cannot occur if this does not happen.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION (WIN-WIN SITUATION)


EXAMPLE:
You have been working in the dialysis unit for almost 15 years since you were
beginning off with your nursing profession as a registered nurse. Also, you took up a
doctorate degree in Nephrology Nursing. You are well-known for your expertise in
handling patients, and all other services in the ward. In addition to that, you are
diligent and are always on time. The administration has promoted you to be the
nurse manager, and you gladly accepted it. A newly hired nurse, Nurse Janine, was
assigned to your team. Nurse Janine, unlike you, is always tardy; not being able to
accomplish any assigned tasks and has poor interrelationship with the other nurses
or staffs. You had a hectic schedule and were not able to have a word with her.
SOLUTION:
Both of the parties should come up with an agreement and thus, will be their
common priority goal. The superior party, which is you, the nurse manager; should
have a one-on-one discussion with Nurse Janine; setting aside some spare time from
the busy schedule. You, as the leader, should carefully assess the situation, and be
able to structure social interaction to accomplish a common goal. Once the
supraordinate goal has been established, you and Nurse Janine would be able to
find alternative solutions to the problem. You, as the nurse manager, can try to let
Nurse Janine rotate shifts to avoid tardiness. Also, you can delegate tasks
appropriate for her at the beginner level. There can be many ways to solve the
problem through collaboration.
