Conditional Statements

Two statements combined by placing the word if before the first and inserting the word
then between them.
{If all humans are mortal and Socrates is a human},[ then Socrates is mortal.]
Antecedent
Consequent
What does it assert?

It asserts not that the antecedent is true but asserts that if the antecedent is true
then the consequent is true.
- It asserts not that the consequent is true but asserts that its consequent is true if its
antecedent is true.
Implication
Is the connection or the relationship between the two statements.

___________ If you mix alcohol and sleeping pills then you sleep forever.

Material Implication
Is a special notion not to be confused with other implications.
No real connection whether logical, definitional or causal.
Often used as an emphatic or humorous method of denying its antecedent
If Ms. Watson agrees to marry me next month then well have the reception on Olympus
Mons.
