Our project focuses on the life of Queen Liliuokalani. We chose this topic because we
were both interested in the history of Hawaii after previous visits to iconic locations related to
her life. After conducting deeper research, we found ourselves immersed in the Queens story,
especially the struggles she underwent throughout her lifetime.
In order to research our topic, we used a multitude of sources, including websites, books,
primary sources, and digital files. We used books and the online database at the California State
University Dominguez Hills library to introduce ourselves to the topic. The internet, however,
proved to be the most useful tool during the research process, as it allowed for easier
collaboration throughout the project. With most of our sources being digital, we were able to
communicate virtually whilst conducting research. Our research was organized by using
Noodletools, taking advantage of its outline tool and annotated bibliography features.
We decided that we would create a website for our project because it seemed like the
most appropriate medium; the ability to incorporate media and images gave us an advantage that
a documentary, exhibit, or paper could not provide. Furthermore, it was something unique that
we had not done before. When we encountered the chance to learn a new skill, we grabbed it and
began our work. After understanding our research, we agreed that the title of our project would
be The First and The Last : Queen Liliuokalanis Battle for Hawaiian Independence as it
encompassed the Queens purpose for her hardships toward autonomy. We designed a basic
outline of our website, chose an overall layout, and started to fill in each subject, conducting
more research as needed. Accumulated research was compiled using quotes from sources for
each corresponding subject, subtly connecting each ones importance to the theme and thesis.
Each page contained buttons to allow access to other pages. With the completion of information,
we then proceeded to improve the aesthetic qualities of our webpage. An interactive timeline,
slideshows, and audio clips were included to provide a more interactive experience into Queen
Liliuokalanis life for the user. Images and media were added, each with its proper citation
below. Quotes from primary and secondary sources were added strengthen argument, each quote
followed by the author or source and the article in which it was taken from. After a detailed
analysis, we formed a conclusion and connected it to the theme and thesis. Other details such as
word count, file size, font, media length, and page uniform were checked to make sure it was
within rule limits.
The first and last queen of Hawaii easily fits into the Taking a Stand in History theme.
Queen Liliuokalanis zealous crusade against American forces displayed her undying loyalty to
her Hawaiian land. Her legacy still prevails to this day; her songs, writings, and lessons are still
celebrated for the impact they continue to leave on the Hawaiian culture.
