LEI 4724
Activity: Long Word/ Short Word
Source: Penelope Langan of Samuel Field YMYWHA, Queens, NY on January 22, 2002
Equipment Needed: White board and markers

Activity Description:
1. Have participants sit facing the white board
2. Write a very long word on top of the white board such as PERSONIFICATION
3. Have participants call out new words that can be made from the long word that are 3
letters or more. Ex. Person, Nice, Note, Cat etc.
4. Write down the words as they are called out and see how many can be thought of

Leadership Considerations:
1. When working with participants that are hearing impaired, allow there to be a sign
language interpreter present so that they will be able to participate equally.
2. For participants with intellectual disabilities, provide examples on the boards first so that
they can see how the game is supposed to go and get an idea for different words that can
be used.
3. Potentially allow for 2 letter words to be created instead of 3 letter words to make the
game easier depending on if working with children or adults, or the level of intellectual
disability that one may have.
