Engineers use computer-aided design (CAD) to design better products faster.

The
CAD software allows the engineer to design and to create images of parts,
integrated circuits, assemblies, and models of virtually anything else--- from
molecules to manufacturing facilities--- at a graphics workstation connected to a
computer.
CAM focuses on the shop floor and the control of the physical manufacturing
process. The output of the CAD system is fed to the CAM system. The CAD
design is converted by CAM into a sequence of processes such as drilling,
turning, or milling by CNC machines. The CAM system monitors and controls the
production process and routing of products through the cell.
In the execution phase, the AS/RS are computer-controlled conveyor systems
that carry raw materials from stores to the shop floor and finished products to the
warehouse, including the CNC machine and the human labor, because under a
CNC configuration, humans still set up the machines wherein the programmer
enters some information in the program but the computer calculates all
necessary data to get the job done.
