FOR YOUR INFORMATION

From: Hany Black, City Manage
Subject: Fire Chief Richard Braun Retirement
Chief Braun has informed me he will retire from City service effective April 8 (see attached). He
was hired as Cincinnati Fire Department (CFD) Chief January 2011.
Over the last 6 years Chief Braun has earned a high degree of respect from those inside and
outside the CFD. It has been my pleasure to work with a true professional who cares deeply
about those he serves.
His many accomplishments include working to end the practice of firehouse “brownouts,”
instilling a culture of respect and pride within the CFD, and strong leadership in honoring fallen
firefighter Daryl Gordon by moving forward with precision and speed the various line of duty
Teports and recommendations. These accomplishments are sure to have long lasting
institutional and public safety benefits.
As soon as possible, the Fire Chief position will be advertised nationally. Internal and extemal
candidates will be encouraged to apply. A committee will be established to review applications.
In addition, we will engage stakeholders including Local 48, our policy makers and extemal
partners,
Prior to April 8, | will appoint an Interim Chief. At that time when | announce the Interim, | will
provide an update on where we are with the search.
Above all, Chief Braun is deeply respected by the men and women he leads and Cincinnati will
undoubtedly miss his service. On behalf of the entire City Administration we wish him nothing
but the best in his well deserved retirement.

Subject: Retirement
Dear Mr. Black,
| want to thank you for all of your support and encouragement during my tenure as the Fire Chief of Cincinnati. It
hhas been a pleasure working with a true professional. Cincinnati has the best Fire Department in the country. Its
firefighters and officers are second to none,
{n the past six years the Department has initiated several major improvements. These improvements have
increased the service provided to the citizens of Cincinnati in @ cost efficient manner. None of the improvements
could have taken place without your support and guidance.
‘Sue and | have appreciated the warm and welcoming way which we have been accepted into the department
family and the community. Cincinnati truly became our home. We have made many good friends and memories
that will last a lifetime.
After great reflection | have decided to turn the reigns of the department over to new leadership. This was a very
hard decision but weighing all of the factors with my family and much prayer itis time to retire. | will be retiring on
April 8, 2017.
| will do whatever is needed to make a smooth transition.
Sincerely,
Chief Richard Braun
