ANDREW CARNEGIE AND

PUBLIC LIBRARIES
As a young man,
Andrew Carnegie
was denied
entrance into a
subscription library
because he could
not afford a library
card.

By 1901 Carnegie
had become the
richest man in the
world when he
sold his steel
company for 480
million dollars!

He spent the
rest of his life
giving over
90% of his
fortune away to
large scale
philanthropic
projects.

He built concert
halls and
universities, but his
greatest legacy is
the establishment
of the Carnegie
library foundation.

Michigan,
including
the EECL!

Andrew Carnegie
donated $60
million dollars to
fund a system of
1,689 public
libraries across
the United States.
