Abstract (or resume) In this doctoral thesis, we tried to estimate opportunities concerning
in the growth and development of small and medium enterprises in the
the language of the Republic of Serbia, factors of their growth and development and their
text: contribution to the development of economy in the Republic of Serbia.

Successfulness of business operations, growth and development of


small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurs in time of great
transition processes, constant changes and economic crises, imply the
following: tendency towards new ideas and innovations, the ability of
creative thinking, constant improvement, persistence when solving
problems, the ability of quick decision-making, managing risks, etc.

What is necessary for the improvement of the overall abilities of small


and medium enterprises, aside from ambient and economic conditions,
is the knowledge and social skills which are in accordance with the
requests of the contemporary socio-economic development.
By using theoretical and empirical research, the main hypothesis of
this dissertation was confirmed: knowledge and innovations based on
knowledge represent the key factor for the growth and development of
small and medium enterprises in modern economic conditions.
