Assignment:

Give one example of a closed system and an open system. Give the illustration and brief description.

What is an open system? What is a closed system?

To start, a closed system is a system that exchanges only energy with its system. No matter is included
in this system. For example, when heating a saucepan, the saucepan allows energy transfer as it heats
up itself and its contents. A closed system cannot allow matter transfer, it can only allow energy
transfer.

Open system freely allows the exchange of energy and matter with its surroundings. For example, when
you are boiling water in an open saucepan both energy and matter are being transferred to the
surroundings by means of steam.
