DELPHOS — One of
this nation’s most solemn
occasions is honored each
time TAPS is played and the
rifles of a 21-gun salute fire
off their rounds. Locally,
when a veteran passes, the
Delphos Veterans Council
pulls out all the stops in
paying honor to our nation’s
heros.
Those who volunteer say
they do it to honor the fallen.
One of them is Korean War
veteran Larry Luersman.
“I’ve been doing it since
the early 90s. We get the
satisfaction of saluting our
veterans who served their
time — we owe that to
them. They did a good job,
especially the World War
II veterans. I was in Korea
but was just 11 years old
when World War II was
being fought and I always
had great respect for those
guys. I remember always
trying to keep up with the
news when I was a kid; we
could be speaking German
or Japanese if not for those
folks,” he said.
The Delphos detail pulls
out all of the stops with a
21-gun salute, flag corp and
TAPS.
“We usually like to have
14 guys because we have
seven guys on rifles, two
more on special rifles; we
have the commander and
the color guard. We have the
American Flag, the state, the
VFW, the American Legion
and others. So, we like to
have 14 guys.
The one with the special
honor of holding the Stars
and Stripes is World War
II veteran Paul Baumgarte,
who has been with the
Delphos detail for four years
but with the Fort Jennings
detail for several years.
“Being retired, I have
plenty of time so I started
with it about four years ago.
I know some of the guys, so
I’m glad to do it. My mili-
tary career was an easy one
because I didn’t see combat
in my time overseas. So, this
is a way I can sort of pay the
guys back a little since they
did the fighting and I did the
traveling,” he said.
There are two musicians
who play trumpet during the
ceremonies, one of which is
Bill Massa.
“I’ve been playing trum-
pet with them since the mid
80s right after I moved to
town. When I started, I
filled in when Doug Harter
couldn’t do it but have been
doing it a little more lately.
I wasn’t in the military but
grew up in a household with
veterans in our family, so
I have always had a lot
of respect for people who
serve the country and this
is just a way for me to give
back,” he said.

see in the world.”
Shannon Warman, of
Ottoville, is doing just that
by advising the University
of Northwestern Ohio
Collegiate Optimist Club
International.
“It started around two
years ago and as they grew
I saw the impact that they
were making and wanted to
be a part of it,” Warman
said.
Being involved with the
organization for the past few
months has already made an
impact on her as she wit-
nesses the effects of people
helping people in the com-
munity.
“I like seeing the students
realize the benefits of volun-
teering when a project comes
to an end and they get to
see culmination of their hard
work,” she said.
While the student members
handle most of the responsi-
ing herself, she said, “Seeing
the children who are helped
to set an example for my
own children to learn about
altruism.” An experience
that stands out in Warman’s
mind is the holiday project
the club undertook.
“Soon after I joined
we were able to purchase
Christmas gifts for a fam-
ily who otherwise would not
have been able to provide
a Christmas for their kids.
Seeing the children’s faces
and knowing how excited
they were was a wonderful
moment for everyone in the
club,” she said. “The idea
behind the Optimist Club
is, ‘bringing out the best
in kids.’ This is the drive
behind everything that we
do. One of the young girls
that was in the family we
adopted for Christmas made
the comment that she wished
for the best Christmas ever
and that is just what she got.
It is unprompted comments
like this that make the work
worthwhile.”
Warman, along with
Tom Grothous and Ginny
Duncan, the club’s other
advisors, acts as a guide and
mentor for the student mem-
bers and she also handles the
administrative side of things
such as booking the venue
for a project.
“We meet once a month
and have ongoing future proj-
ect planning in the between
time. While part of my job
is dealing with the admin-
istrative part, the advisors
of the Optimist Club have
received an immeasurable
amount of support from the
UNOH administration and
the Delphos and Shawnee
Optimist Clubs, who are
our co-sponsors,” Warman
continued, “The university
embraced the idea of bring-
ing the Optimist Club on
campus and has continued
their support with every
project we have participated
in.”
Warman divulged what is
next on the UNOH Optimist
Club’s horizon.
“As for future projects,
we are participating in sell-
ing refreshments as a fund-
raiser in the upcoming car
show at the university and we
are planning a talent show,”

DELPHOS — Between
East and West, cultures of
the divergent hemispheres
are so unlike each other,
they may seem to be on
separate planets. The differ-
ences include how families
conduct their affairs, includ-
ing raising children.
Local native Chuck
Bertling, 60, founded a min-
istry based in Vaughnsville
called Metro Southeast
Asia. He said there are
approximately 300 church-
es in Bangkok and none
are conducting consistent,
long-term ministry in gar-
bage dumps where fami-
lies live and raise the next
generation in Thailand. He
describes life there as drasti-
cally impoverished.
“I work in a garbage
dump in Bangkok with chil-
dren who live in it. They
are very poor; they build
shacks with tin or cardboard
— whatever they can get
hold of. If they have lumber,
they will try to elevate it,”
he said.
He said people earn
money by picking through
trash to sell recyclables to
private companies. Bertling
explains that trash collec-
tion fits into the social
model very differently
there than it does in the
United States.
“When garbage trucks
come in, depending on what
village the garbage men live
in, they go to the place in
their village where recy-
cling is done. They weigh

I recently attended
Columbus Pride, a weekend
intended to increase the vis-
ibility and acceptance of the
GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual,
and transgender) community.
I understand that what we
live in is a predominantly
Christian, conservative area,
and I’m not trying to change
anyone’s mind here. I write
about what I’m thinking about,
so you might have read about
my frivolous little life being

absence from town during
the fire, many incidents of
a serious as well as a laugh-
able character will remain
unwritten. Noble deeds by
noble women and men were
performed that ought to be

mark on his or her beliefs
every now and then to see if
anything has changed.
I was raised a Christian.
I was also raised to use my
brain and think for myself.
Above all, I was raised to
follow The Golden Rule. I
have the freedom to marry
Andy and prance around all
day long holding his hand,
maybe even sneaking a kiss

scandalous.

rendered noble assistance in
fighting the fire. They have
the thanks of Delphos.
Probably fifty families in
the district threatened, but
which fortunately, escaped
the flames, removed all their
household goods to places of
safety. The general confusion
which followed in hunting up
articles, only those interested
can fully appreciate. We have
heard of no babies getting
mixed up.
Christ Daub, the industri-
ous mechanic, had just made
the last payment on a com-
fortable home, which was
swept away in a flash, leav-
ing him penniless.
The post-office was threat-
ened and the contents were
removed. About $200 worth
of postage stamps were lost
or stolen in the removal. But
one serious accident occurred
during the fire. Mr. George
Lang, of Shenk & Lang, in
attempting to suppress the
fire in the second floor of
their store, found himself by
the flames, and the only hope
left to save himself was to
jump through the window to
the ground below. In breaking
through the glass, his face,
hands and arms were terribly
lacerated and severely singed
by the flames. He has been
confined to his bed since, but
it is sincerely hoped by his
many friends that his recov-
ery will be speedy.
Alex Shenk is probably
the heaviest looser by the
recent fire. It is carefully esti-
mated at $10,000. The fire
was not yet extinguished
when he broke ground for a
new brick building.
Hunt & Walsh are also
very heavy losers, but they
too, will soon commence
the erection of a fine brick
block.
The effects of the fire are
perceptible in the appear-
ance of swarms of insurance
agents. It doesn’t require as
much argument to induce
parties to insure now as it
did before the fire happened.
Everybody is hunting insur-
ance now.
Scarcely had the St. Mary’s
school and the Sisters home
been completed when they
were threatened by destruc-
tion. The fire, from a small
start, spread quickly and left
a trail of destruction through-
out the town.

I had a great time at the
Pride Parade and festival and
even caught up with a cou-
ple of wonderful high school
friends who, after graduation,
eventually found the courage
within themselves to “come
out.” Nicholas Tebbe attend-
ed Pride weekend and said,
“I think Pride is something
someone from all social back-
grounds should try to attend
at least once. To me, Pride is
a time to celebrate people as
individuals and accept them
and all their differences. Pride
is a time to leave behind those
preconceived prejudices and
recognize that we as indi-
viduals are far greater than
the labels such as ‘gay’ or
‘lesbian’ that make it so easy
to leave out personal identity.
Pride, at its essence, is accep-
tance of ourselves and respect
of the differences in the indi-
viduals around us.”

caught fire and very narrowly
escaped the fate of so many
other buildings.
The ruinous flames caught
the first log church built by
the first settlers on Main
Street. These were totally
destroyed as were many of
the original log structures
so painstakingly built by the
first colonists of “Ten Mile
Woods.”
Most of the damage was
confined to the business sec-
tion between Second and
Third streets, the Miami-
Erie Canal and Washington
street.
As a result of the fire, the
Washington Fire Company
was organized on July 1,
1872. The town council voted
to erect a fire engine house,
twenty by forty feet, at a cost
of $250. A hand pump with
five hundred feet of hose was
purchased from Xenia. On
Feb. 14, 1873, a hose reel
was purchased and construc-
tion of seven fire cisterns,
each with a two hundred and
fifty barrel capacity.

under the sidewalk in front of
some stores on Main Street.

Flames Rage in
Downtown Delphos
The worst fire to hit
Delphos in thirty years turned
a half block here into a raging
inferno last night as it gut-
ted the recently redecorated
Peoples National Bank and
Vogt and Vogt’s restaurant.
The blaze originated
between 8 and 9 p.m. in the
bank’s basement, and did
damage estimated as high as
$800,000. Fire Chief Paul
Clinger said that the gas
incinerator in the basement
apparently exploded.
Persons attending a union
meeting on the second floor
reported hearing what they
described as “a couple of
thuds” about half an hour
before the fire was reported
at 9:05 p.m. The incinerator
was located directly under
the bank’s small loan dept.
The blaze was discovered
by bank employe Harold
Swick and Albert Hageman.
They were in the Vogt res-
taurant and smelled smoke
coming from the basement.
When Swick opened a bank
door, the smoke drove him
back, and he rushed to the
fire station across the street to
report the fire.
Chief Clinger said the
blaze was of major propor-
tions and he immediately
phoned for help. In addition
to the local department, the

I met numerous people
that day, people of differ-
ent genders, ages, ethnicities
and sexual orientation. I was
truly moved beyond words at
what I felt at this public out-
pouring of support for equal
rights. Would any of you like
to live your life entirely “in
the closet,” unable to openly
express your love for the per-
son your heart beats for and
be forced to live a lie just to
be accepted by others who
didn’t agree with your deci-
sion? I wouldn’t. But I am
only one person…
And this is…

deputies and State Highway
Patrolmen from both Allen
and Van Wert assisted local
police in keeping hundreds
of people that lined the
streets back from the blaze,
and assisted this morning in
directing traffic around the
gutted building.
A Van Wert pumper with
an aerial ladder broke down
along U.S. 30 on the way to
Delphos and was reportedly
abandoned along the high-
way.
Smoke damage was
reported at the Lion Clothing
Store next door and to
Shenk’s Drygoods Store.
Both Frank Wellman of the
Lion Store and Robert Shenk
of the Shenk Store was high
in their praise this morning of
Delphos citizens who assist-
ed in carrying mechandise
from the two stores. Most
of the merchandise was car-
ried across the street to the
Westrich Store.
Elmer Scherger, vice pres-
ident and cashier of the bank,
told the Herald this morning
that all records are intact.
When the vault was opened
at 7 a.m. today, Scherger said,
there was not even warm air
in it.
Banking operations will
be continued at the Drive-
In bank until further notice,
Scherger said.
Attorney John Shenk,
whose office is on the second
floor, went through his office
this morning and said the steel
filing cabinets withstood the
fire. “All confidential papers
are intact,” Shenk said, “and
no records of any value were
destroyed.” He will conduct
his business from his home at
229 East Third street for the
present.
Edmund Wurst and Dr.
David Morgan, who have
offices in the building, were
not available for comment
this morning.
Firemen were on the job
battling the blaze until about
4:30 a.m. although it was
largely under control by mid-
night.
At times water from six
to eight hoses were used on
the fire. Shortly after 11 p.m.
the water from the canal was
pressed into use.
The water level was raised
in the canal and two hoses
were used to raise the water
pressure.
The two Lima trucks
reached the scene about 50
minutes after the blaze was
first spotted and the 75-foot
aerial ladder poured thou-
sands of gallons of water
over the bank’s roof.
Ambulances were sent to
the scene by Harter & Son
and by Kolkmeyer, Clark &
Helmkamp, but neither saw
action.

argued with the pleasant,
sun-splashed weather
during Friday’s night’s
Van Wert County
ACME baseball tourna-
ment openers.
That wasn’t the
problem.
Defense was.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Tears
rolled down Paulo Gama’s face and
his girlfriend sobbed in his arms as
he stared in disbelief at the video
screen on Copacabana beach.
The final whistle had signaled
that Brazil — colossus of the soc-
cer world and favorite to win the
World Cup — was eliminated from
the tournament in a 2-1 loss to the
Netherlands.
Across the famous beach, heads
bowed and many of the 20,000 peo-
ple there crumpled to the white sand.
Grandfathers holding babies cried.
Brazil’s colors of canary yellow and
green streaked down faces paint-
ed with the national flag. Children
looked up to their mothers at the
grief around them.
“Tomorrow, the sun will not
rise,” Gama said.
That was all he could say. It was
all anyone could say in this land of
Carnival and samba, where a pas-
sionate people mourn as acutely as
they celebrate.
“It’s over. It’s over. I cannot
believe that it is over,” said Luciano
Barreto, using the Brazil jersey in
his hand to wipe his face. Earlier,
when top-ranked Brazil took a 1-0
lead and looked like it was cruising
toward an easy victory, that same
shirt was proudly waved in the air
with the certainty of a win and head-
ing toward a sixth World Cup title.
Robinho, the nimble-footed, goal-
scoring wizard, had given Brazil the
lead in the 10th minute. Just two
minutes before, he had a goal waved
off for an offside call.
But the Netherlands found its
footing and equalized in the 53rd
when a shot bounced off the head
of Brazil’s Felipe Melo into his own
goal.
The goal that crushed the hearts
of 190 million Brazilian fans came
financial meltdown and saw record
economic growth in the first quarter
of this year.
In short, Brazil seemingly has
been winning at everything. Until
Friday’s soccer match, when they
lost at the one thing they win most.
Now, fans will have four years to
debate what went wrong.
But if there is any country emo-
tionally equipped to deal with such a
defeat, it is Brazil.
In the Portuguese language there
is a word that Brazilians swear can-
not be translated: “saudades” — to
painfully enjoy longing, to recognize
and cherish the ache of someone
or something that is beyond one’s
grasp.
The joy Brazil is known for and
with which its teams have always
played is the direct result of embrac-
ing a long journey through agony.
Waiting at the end is the moment of
elation: the return of a loved one, a
long-awaited kiss, a game-winning
goal.
That lovely Brazilian trait was on
display Friday. Twenty minutes after
the game ended, samba drummers
took the stage on Copacabana beach,
their powerful, familiar rhythm
soothing a restive crowd.
Uruguay beats Ghana 4-2
in penalty shootout: Nothing, it
seemed, would go in for Ghana.
Not the shot kicked away at the
goal line. Not the block ruled a
handball an instant later as extra
time ticked to a close. Not the sub-
sequent penalty kick that sure-foot-
ed Asamoah Gyan sent bouncing
straight up off the crossbar.
And not two more tries in the
shootout as Uruguay, suddenly still
alive, made four kicks and won the
match 4-2 Friday night after a 1-1
draw. The South Americans were
headed to the World Cup semifinals
for the first time in 40 years.
The Ghanaians were headed
home in tears.
in front of him in the final seconds
of extra time, all he needed to do
was send it past Muslera — and that
would have sent the Black Stars into
the semifinals, an African first at the
World Cup.
Child’s play for Gyan, who
twice in the tournament had scored
on a penalty kick. He stared down
Muslera, then stroked the ball sol-
idly.
Just as solidly, it hit the crossbar.
Gyan stumbled away holding his
head.
Victories — and defeats — don’t
come any tougher than this.
Rather than faint, Uruguay
pounced on an almost unimaginable
second chance.
The fans, except for the small
pockets of blue-clad Uruguay sup-
porters in the crowd of 84,017,
booed Uruguay star striker Diego
Forlan before he calmly sent the first
kick of the shootout past Richard
Kingson.
And who would step up first
for Ghana but Gyan — and he also
struck the ball perfectly. Had he
done so minutes earlier, Ghana and
all of Africa would be celebrating an
historic achievement.
Instead, the shootout moved to
3-2 for Uruguay and Muslera guessed
correctly, diving left for an easy save
on John Mensah. After Maximiliano
Pereira’s kick skied over the net for
Uruguay, the vuvuzelas again were
at their loudest.
But Muslera also stopped
Adiyiah and Sebastian Abreu won it
with a soft but accurate placement as
Kingson dived right.
As his teammates sprinted to
smother him in an ecstatic scrum,
several Ghanaians slumped to the
field.
And Soccer City fell silent
again.
Well, not entirely. Those
Uruguayans who couldn’t be heard
over the din during the match were
tallies — behind him in a
7-1 loss to Crestview.
The winners meet at
11 a.m. today at Smiley
Park, while the losers
meet at 1:30 p.m.
It started early in the opener.
An error and three bases-on-
balls allowed Van Wert’s Joey
Hurless to score for a 1-0 edge
in the top of the first — Van
Wert lost the coin flip. However,
Geise fanned the last two batters
to keep it there.
The Jays tried to retaliate
against winning pitcher Tyler
Paige (7 innings, 119 pitches, 6
hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 6 walks,
2 Ks). With one down, Geise
singled and stole second. Chris
Pohlman walked. Ryan Buescher
forced the latter at second, send-
ing Geise to third. However,
both were left stranded, two of
the 11 the Blue Jays left on base.
Van Wert had 10.
Van Wert had a runner reach
second in the second with one
down but no farther.
Cody Kundert led off the
Jays’ second with a walk and
went to third on a 1-out bloop to
right by Ryan Densel. However,
Densel was nabbed stealing and
Paige retired the next batter for
the third out.
The Jays tied it in the
home half of the third. Tanner
Calvelage singled and burgled
second. Geise walked. Pohlman
bounced into a third-to-first dou-
ble play, with Geise hustling all
the way to third. He scored from
there on a bloop to short right-
center by Buescher but the latter
was left on base.
The Cougars failed to use a
leadoff double by Cody Heitz in
the fourth, getting him to third
with one down. Luke Riley and
Steven Sullivan walked but a

walk, error and RBI single by
Jake Wortman to take a 1-0 lead.
George whiffed the next two to
get out only down a run.
Justin Rode singled with two
down in the home half against
winner Brad Miller (6 innings,
3 hits, 7 strikeouts) but was
stranded.
Crestview’s Cole Rolsten,
after getting plunked with one
down in the second, got to third
on a stolen base and error but
remained there.
The Wildcats tried to tie it
up in the home half as Nick
Cook (2-for-3) singled with one
down, stole second and took
third on a bounceout to short

Turtles in My Sandbox

Maggie has found several
terrapin turtle eggs in her
sandbox and decides to be
a ‘turtle sitter.’ The mother
turtle must have mistaken
her sandbox for the beach.
Maggie and her mother
placed a wire protector aver
the eggs to keep other ani-
mals from eating the eggs.
The turtles stayed in the eggs
for 55 days. Maggie names
the turtles when they hatched
even though she knew she
would set them free when
they were ready. This is a
great nature story fitting right
into our summer theme. This

They also said that efforts
are under way to clean up the
bank building so that patrons
will have access to the safe
deposit boxes as soon as pos-

Children of accused spies confront identity crisis

NEW YORK — Children often ask the
question “Who am I?” as they come of age,
but that’s nothing like the identity crisis now
confronting the sons and daughters of four
couples accused of spying for Russia.
Over a turbulent week, at least some, and
maybe all, have discovered that mom and
dad are not who they said they were. The
children’s citizenship, family history, and
even their very names have been called into
question.
At least two children involved in the case,
ages 1 and 3, will soon be headed for Russia.
Of the 11 people charged this week with
being members of a Russian spy ring, eight
were parents. Collectively, they are believed
to have eight children, although, like much
else associated with this strange post-Cold
War spying case, the true facts are hazy.
Some of the older children are likely
already wrestling with questions about their
identities.
Juan Lazaro Jr., a gifted 17-year-old pia-
nist at New York’s LaGuardia High School
of the performing arts, was named after his
father. But the FBI said this week that dad’s
name was fake, as was his claim to have been
raised in South America.
Tim Foley, a 20-year-old student at George
Washington University, wrote on a blog that
he was born in Toronto and grew up in Paris
and Boston. Now his true birth country has
been called into question. Prosecutors say
they have evidence the family is actually

WASHINGTON — Confident but still cautious. Smart
and then some. Disarming. Knowing. Wicked funny.
This week’s Senate confirmation hearings were
America’s first and probably last chance for an in-depth
conversation with Elena Kagan, who most likely will
soon vanish into the cloistered corridors of the Supreme
Court.
Judging, she told the Senate Judiciary Committee,
is “not a robotic or automatic enterprise.” Nor were
Kagan’s answers. Even one of her toughest questioners,
Republican Jeff Sessions of Alabama, said her responses
had revealed her “gifts and graces” — though without
telling senators much about how she’d rule.
She fielded legal questions of every variety, comfort-
able enough to admit it when she hadn’t a clue about a
particular case and savvy enough to clam up when she
knew an answer could get her in hot water.
“I have a feeling if I do that, I’m going to end up
doing many things that I regret,” Kagan said as she
declined one senator’s invitation to state an opinion. She
deflected any number of questions, to the frustration of
the questioners.
At the same time, Kagan framed her answers in
plainspoken language that suggested this product of
Princeton, Oxford and Harvard still had her feet on the
ground.
She called one senator’s hypothetical legislation “a
dumb law.” The Constitution, she said, was a “genius
document.” But the notion of a living Constitution was
too “loosey-goosey.”

MEXICO CITY — The drug-cartel enforcer told an
unsettling story: A woman who worked in the Mexican bor-
der’s biggest U.S. consulate had helped a rival gang obtain
American visas. And for that, the enforcer said, he ordered
her killed.
Nonsense, says a U.S. official, who said Friday the motive
for the slaying remains unknown.
The employee, Lesley Enriquez, and two other people con-
nected to the U.S. consulate in the city of Ciudad Juarez were
killed March 13 in attacks that raised concerns that Americans
were being caught up in drug-related border violence.
Jesus Ernesto Chavez, whose arrest was announced Friday,
confessed to ordering the killings, said Ramon Pequeno, the
head of anti-narcotics for the Federal Police. Pequeno said
Chavez leads a band of hit men for a street gang tied to the
Juarez cartel.
Enriquez and her husband were killed in Ciudad Juarez,
across the border from El Paso, Texas, as they drove toward a
border crossing. Chavez also is accused in a nearly simultane-
ous attack that killed the husband of a Mexican employee of
the consulate.
Pequeno said Chavez told police that Enriquez was targeted
because she helped provide visas to a rival gang.
A U.S. federal official familiar with the investigation said
Friday that after the killings, U.S. officials investigated pos-
sible corruption involving Enriquez and found none. The
official was not authorized to speak about the case and spoke
on condition of anonymity.
The official said the motive behind the killing remains
unclear.
Officials with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City declined
to comment. At the U.S. Justice Department in Washington,
spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler law enforcement “continues to
work closely with our Mexican counterparts to bring to justice

U.S. Embassy officials previously said that Enriquez was
never in a position to provide visas and worked in a section
that provides basic services to U.S. citizens in Mexico.
Mexican police provided no further details from Chavez’s
confession on how Enriquez might have helped provide visas
to a drug gang.
Enriquez was four months pregnant when she and her hus-
band, Arthur H. Redelfs, were killed by gunmen who opened
fire on their vehicle after the couple left a children’s birthday
party. Their 7-month-old daughter was found wailing in the
back seat.
Jorge Alberto Salcido, the husband of a Mexican employee
of the consulate, also was killed by gunmen after leaving the
same event in a separate vehicle.
Chavez told police that gunmen opened fire on Salcido
because the two cars were the same color and the hit men did
not know which one Enriquez was in, Pequeno said.
Investigators also have looked at whether Redelfs may
have been targeted because of his work at an El Paso County
jail that holds several members of the Barrio Azteca, the
gang believed to be responsible for the attacks. Pequeno said
Chavez belongs to Barrio Azteca, which works for the Juarez
cartel on both sides of the border.
In March, U.S. federal, state and local law enforcement
officers swept through El Paso, picking up suspected members
of the gang in an effort to find new leads in the killings. A sus-
pect detained in Mexico shortly after the shooting confessed
to acting as a lookout as the Azteca gang supposedly hunted
down Redelfs, but he was never charged and was released
without explanation.
Officials also have speculated that both attacks could have
been a case of mistaken identity.
