PARTS OF AN EGG

Yolk- yellow and spherical middle part of an egg


i. Nourishes the developing embryo. It is rich in
lipids, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
ii. Contains germinal disc which develops into an
embryo after fertilization
Chalazae- twisted mucin fibres attached to the shell
membranes on both ends of the egg and to the yolk
i.hold the yolk in the central position of the egg
ii.prevents breakdown/spreading of the yolk due to
vibrations
Albumen/egg white- consists of outer and inner
albumen.
i.nourishes the developing embryo. It is rich in proteins,
vitamins and water.
ii.it buoys the yolk.
iii.cushions the inner parts of an egg
shell membranes- found just beneath the shell. Consist
of inner membrane and outer membrane.
i.protect and hold inner parts of an egg in position
ii. allow exchange of gases between the inner parts of an
egg and environment
Air space-
i. Holds air
Egg shell- outer part of an egg. Made up of mainly
calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate.
i.provides protection of inner parts of an egg.
ii. Allows gaseous exchange since it is porous
iii.prevents entry of micro-organisms.

A-Germinal disc: Develops into embryo in a fertilized egg


B-Streak (Latebra): Joins the germinal disc to the yolk
C-Yolk: Nourishes the developing embryo
D-Vitelline membrane: Gives the yolk its shape
