He said in the early stages of the industrial revolution, the machines were
assisting the human beings. Whereas, now, increasingly the machines are
replacinghumanbeings.

"We,inIndia,maynotstillbethere.Wehavestillsomewaytogo.Butsooner
orlaterastagecanbereachednotonlyinIndia,elsewhereintheworldhowto
cope up with the increasing number of machines which replaces the work of
humanswillhavetobehandled,"heopined.

Expressing concern about the quality of higher education in India, the former
Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister said as per reports on Engineering
colleges, nearly 70 per cent of the people come out of the institutions are not
equippedwithnecessaryskills.

While there has been a significant shift in evaluating performance based on


productivity, this TimesJobs study confirms that perceived gender differences
stillexist.However,thisismoreofamindsetissue,thananactualdifferencein
jobperformance.Evenifwomendonotspendasmanyhoursintheworkplace,
theirproductivityandoutputisequal,ifnotgreaterinsomecases,thanthatof
men today. This is increasingly being recognized in India Inc." says Nilanjan
Roy,HeadofStrategy,TimesBusinessSolutions.

Thoughmoremaleemployeesputinextrahoursatworkmorefrequently,the
levelofdispleasureindoingovertimeisalmostequalforbothgenders.About
60%maleand70%femaleemployeesarenothappyputtinginextrahoursat
work.

holidaysandvacationswith55%femaleemployeessayingtheyhavenoissues

Worklifebalanceholdsgreatsignificanceforbothmaleandfemaleemployees

On the question of happiness with their current balance, 65% female


employees say they are happy with their current worklife balance while only
40%maleemployeessaytheyarehappywiththeircurrentworklifesituation.

arestillregardedastaboosatworkplace.TimesJobsrevealsthatthesematters
are often more forbidding for female employees, as 70% male employees are
happy to disclose to their colleagues if they are looking out for a job change
while70%femaleemployeesareaversetotheidea.

Also, 60% male employees would comfortably disclose their salary package
among their peers, while 70% female employees would not as they feel
embarrassedandotherswillfeeljealousorunhappymakingcomparisons.

Itappearsthatsocialfactorsandconditioningarebyandlarge,responsiblefor
the apparent gender differences at the workplace. But, at the same time, this
studyalsorevealssomeinterestingsimilaritiesandsurprisingfactswhichbreak
gender stereotypes at the workplace and bring in a different perspective
altogether.

The survey finds that in the short term digitisation would require skill
enhancement and adoption of new skills but it won't hit the jobs too much
globally."Intheshortterm,thefutureofworkisbright.Mostemployersexpect
automation and the adjustment to digitization will bring a net gain for
employment. Eightythree per cent intend to maintain or increase their
headcount and upskill their people in the next two years. Only 12 per cent of
employers plan to decrease headcount as a result of automation," the survey
says.

NewgenerationprivatesectorlenderYesBankisrecruitingabout500people
everymonthwhileKolkatabasedBandhanBankhashired4,000employeesin
the current financial year and the payroll is still on the rise. Yes Bank did not
replytoETsqueriesasitisinthesilentperiodaheadofitsDecemberquarter
earnings.

Demonetisation impact is temporary, said Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, CEO of


BandhanBank.Going forward, business opportunities will be huge. Wehave
beenopeningbrancheseveryweekacrossallIndianstates.Weneedtorecruit
tokeeppacewiththisexpansion.

Wehopetorecruitsomewherearoundthat(4,000employees)inFY1718,he
said.

ThebankhaslaunchedtheBandhanNextgenBankersProgrammewhichaims
at nurturing young graduates with sectorspecific knowledge and the required
skillsets.

Banks are mostly hiring in smaller cities and towns as bankers see a higher
potential in expanding their branches there. According to placement agents,
smaller financial services firms are expanding in nonmetro and rural
strongholds,totapmorebusiness.

Demonetisationhasnotaffectedsmallbanks(unlikelargebanks)astheyare
instartupmode,saidKunalSen,seniorvicepresident,TeamLeaseServices.
Small and midsized banks are recruiting mostly from tier2 and tier3 cities,
which is their catchment area. Small banks have completed their leadership
hiringandarenowhiringforfeetonstreet(sales)andbranchbankingroles.

Average remuneration for staff in feetonstreet role is Rs 10,00015,000 per


month while those taking up branch banking roles would earn around Rs
20,00040,000permonth.

LakshmiVilasBank(LVB)planstohire500peoplein2017.Whilearound300
400peoplewillbehiredattheentrylevel,theremainingwillbeforvariousother
levels.

We see business optimism coming back next financial year. We are


accordingly preparing ourselves, said NS Venkatesh, executive director of
LakshmiVilasBank.Asthedemonetisationdrivefuelschancesofacashless
economy, we are in the process of hiring people with expertise in digital
technology.Thebankisundergoingatransformation.Hence,weplantohire
morespecialists,hesaid.

Thefindingsofthereporttitled'TheSkillsRevolution'arebasedonasurveyof
18,000 employers across all sectors in 43 countries, published today at the
WorldEconomicForum(WEF).

"Morethan90percentofemployersexpecttheirorganisationtobeimpacted
bydigitisationinthenexttwoyears,"itsaid.

On the other hand, employers in Italy, Guatemala and Peru are the most
optimisticabouttheimpactofautomationonjobs.

"Wecannotslowtherateoftechnologicaladvance,butemployerscaninvestin
their employees' skills so people and organisations can remain relevant," the
reportadded.

Itnotedthattechnologywouldreplacebothcognitiveandmanualroutinetasks
sopeoplecantakeonnonroutinetasksandmorefulfillingroles.

"Creativity,emotional intelligence and cognitive flexibility are skills thatwilltap


human potential and allow people to augment robots, rather than be replaced
bythem,"itsaid.

Forpeople,employabilitytheabilitytogainandmaintainadesiredjobno
longerdependsonwhatyoualreadyknow,butonwhatyouarelikelytolearn.

"InthisSkillsRevolution,learnabilitythedesireandabilitytolearnnewskills
to stay relevant and remain employable will be the great equaliser," said
JonasPrising,ManpowerGroupChairman&CEO.

"It'stimetotakeimmediateactiontoupskillandreskillemployeestoaddress
thegapsbetweentheHavesandtheHaveNotsthosethathavetherightskills
andthosethatareatriskofbeingleftbehind,"Prisingsaidfurther.

Globally,thereportsaidintheshortterm,thefutureofworkisbrightasmost
employersexpectautomationandtheadjustmenttodigitisationwillbringanet
gainforemployment.

"Eightythree per cent intend to maintain or increase their head count and up
skilltheirpeoplein the next two years. Only 12 per cent of employersplanto
decreaseheadcountasaresultofautomation,"thereportsaid.
