Unit: Residential Design

Title: Wall Framing

Description: Teach lesson on wall framing. Help students to better understand framing and design.

Overall Expectations:
A.3 Demonstrate an understanding of drafting standards, conventions, and guidelines for various types of drawings used to
represent designs.
B.2 Apply appropriate methods for generating and graphically representing design ideas and solutions.

Specific Expectations:
A1.2 Identify the steps in the design process and demonstrate an understanding of the relationships among the steps.
A2.3 Use technical illustrations, drafting, computer graphics, and models to present ideas and solutions.
A3.2 Demonstrate and understanding of drawing types and of drafting standards and conventions with an emphasis on
working drawings.

Lesson Body:
1. Review yesterdays teaching.
What is the common depth of a closet?
What is the minimum width?
Are hallways considered usable space?
What is the minimum width & maximum width of a hall?
What is the minimum Walk-in closet size? Is this a comfortable size? What is a better more
usable size?
Is it ideal to have a bath tub/shower unit along an exterior wall with a window? Why?

2. Review floor plan drawing start-up.
Students are draw floor plans at first with now doors or windows pretend they dont exist.
DO NOT draw the foot print of the building, rather start from one corner and spread across the
design. Room sizes and function are more important than the footprint size.
Use paper scale NOT room sizes as they may be incorrect.

3. Lesson - Wall Framing & Construction using the LCD projector and PowerPoint (WALL FRAMING.PPT)
IAS Wall Framing copy enough handouts for the class
Discuss design points with students to ensure total understanding of points.

4. Students are to use the remainder of the period to work on their projects.
