Summary (Specific Gravity of Soil Solids)

The specific gravity of soil is the proportion of the mass of the given soil to the mass
of the volume of distilled water. The first step in the experiment was to determine the weight
of the of the volumetric mass having 500 ml of distilled water. Then, we obtained 100 g of
granular soil that passed through No.4 sieve and was poured into the volumetric flask with
2/3 full of water. To remove the air in the volumetric flask with soil and water mixture, the
flask was heated until the contents of the flask boils for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes of
boiling the flask, the temperature of the flask was brought down to room temperature. Then,
we added a certain amount of water to bring the volume of the mixture to 500 ml. The 500 ml
sample was then transferred into 3 evaporating dishes. The evaporating dishes with the soil
and water mixture were placed in the oven until it dried. The dried sample was weighed and
recorded. To compute for the specific gravity, the weight of the dry soil was divided by the
weight of equal volume of water. The computed specific gravity in the experiment was 1.245.
