BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS: SPREADSHEETS, WORD TEMPLATE, NARRATED POWERPOINT

Name: Morgan Reed

Grade Level: 1st Grade
Content Area: Math
Basic Productivity Tool Used: NCES Create-A-Graph
Standards Addressed: MCC1.MD.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three
categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each
category, and how many more or less in one category than in another.

Blooms Level of Critical Thinking:

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating
Description of how to implement in the class: I will introduce the activity by modeling how to
collect data and add this data into NCES Create-A-Graph. Then, discuss how to analyze the data using
the different variations of graphs (line, bar, circle, etc.) While discussing this with the students I will
then ask them what their favorite season is and to go stand in a specific corner of the room related to
that season. When we count up these totals, we will add them into our data points for the NCES
Create-A-Graph. We will go through creating this graph together, come up with a title, the titles for
the axis, and the names for each of the bars. Once the data has been entered and the students have
seen how to make a graph, they will get to explore on their own making their own graph in whichever
format they may choose.
While they are exploring the various graphs, I will prompt them to analyze the information provided
in the graph using the appropriate terms. I can ask questions such as: How many more students liked
Summer than Winter? How many people participated in the poll total? How many students picked
either Fall or Spring as their favorite season?
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): This activity has a LoTi level of 2, until the students
begin to graph information on their own, then it moves to a LoTi level 3. To make it go up to a LoTi
level 4, students will be encouraged to collect information, graph the data, and analyze the results on
their own. They can then share it with the class and explain what exactly each part of their graph
represents. They can come up with questions as well like I did before in the lesson.
Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided *: This graph displays the data
collected as the students selected their favorite
season. This graph allows students to be able to
analyze the information and help learn the
concepts of greater than and less than.

Other comments about your proposed spreadsheet/graph/chart activity: The NCES Create-A-
Graph can easily be extended in many ways to support higher levels of thinking, higher blooms levels,
and higher LoTi levels as discussed above.
