Barker Church

A Lost Bronte Novel

by Writer Unknown

Daniel Lakeman is a sympathetic and hilarious orphan raised by a cowardly and cold-
blooded aunt. Eventually he gets a job working as a teacher for the admirable Lady Barker
of Barker Church. The unlikely couple rapidly succumb to a splendid passion.

On the day of their wedding, a tight-fisted brother escapes from the attic of Barker Church
and starts a fire. Believing that Lady Barker is dead, Daniel flees from the church and
wanders the breezy moors for days until he is rescued by a articulate police officer.

However, although Lady Barker is blinded by the fire, she still breathes. Without Daniel
she becomes hungry and mean. She turns to alcohol for comfort. The ghost of the brother
from the attic haunts her.

Meanwhile, thinking Lady Barker is dead, Daniel accepts a marriage proposal from his
saviour, the police officer. However, one night he believes he can hear Lady Barker calling,
"Daniel, where are you? Daniel come home!" and he returns to Barker Church.

On Daniel's return, he finds Lady Barker drunk and without sight. Mistaking him for the
ghost of the tight-fisted brother, she attacks him with a gun and Daniel Lakeman dies.

As she attends to the body, Lady Barker realises what she has done. Driven mad with
guilt, she hatches a plan to destroy the next generation, but there is no next generation
and she dies of consumption two weeks later.
