Tune to the Wabash Cannonball
Fort Benning, Georgia
Sand Hill - 1944
It was in Fort Sam Houston in the winter of ‘43
When a railroad outfit was organized and we formed Company "C"
We marched for basic training some twenty miles away
“Twas Bullis in the Texas Hils, in mud and rain it lay
Itwasn't very pretty, as anyone will tll,
Before we do another stretch we'll roast a day in hell!
For Captain he had shouted, that we would soldiers be
Before we'd move a step ahead in his Company “C"
In the cold and dreary mornings we'd hear, “Let's rise and shine!”
Itwas, "Load and lock your pieces, and ready on the line”
"To the left flank and to the right flank, to the read and forward harch’
‘Till there wasn't one among us who didn't hate to march
We bitched and cussed and drank and fought and didn't give a damn
For stars or bars or maple leaves or non commissioned man
We were grimy and slimy and you couldn't find a trace of cleanliness
Or neatness o military grace
But from this mess and muck and rain we grew stout as a tree
And everyone in Texas whispered, “there goes Company
Soon after, we left Sam Houston and thought we'd left the rain
‘When unexpected one night we loaded on a train
She highballed from the station and eastward she was bound,
And at Sand Hill in Benning we finally hit the ground,
We set aside out packs and guns and went forth on the road,
To learn to operate a pike by Military code
From the Santa Fe, The M.K.T, The MOP and Southern Pacific,
Allljoined up in the M.R.S. and trained on the C of GWe started from Columbus and ran to Birmingham,
Up and down the Mountains, around and through the land
We toiled by day and toiled by night with never any rest,
‘And very soon thereafter, they claimed we'd be the best.
This work was old to all the men and minds began to stray
Every soldier found a sweetheart somewhere along the way
They sought us and they loved us and they needed sympathy,
For a irl is sure to break her heart when she trusts in Company “C”
