Self-Assessment of Mock Lesson

Name: Katelyn Miller

Curriculum Expectation/Movement Skill Taught: B1.4 send and receive

objects using different body parts and equipment, adjusting for speed, while applying basic
principles of movement (throwing)

Grade: 4

1. What were your strengths? i.e., what went well

- I used the students to help with the instruction of proper throwing techniques. I
figure that by the time they reach grade 4, they have been throwing for a few years
and they have been taught throwing techniques previously. The students were able
to reach all of my points, so I had no need to add more, but in real life, I may have
to add a few pointers.

- I think I balanced the amount of time instructing vs. the amount of time doing the
activity well. Students spent more time doing than listening to me.

2. What could you improve or build on? i.e., what didnt go so well

- Next time I would use more hula hoops. Very few students were able to be
successful at the activity, which would lead to a lot of frustration for grade 4
students.

- I would do this activity outside, as the gym floor was too slippery.

- I should spend more time giving feedback as the activity progresses on the skill
being taught.

3. What questions do you still have about teaching movement skills and
concepts?

- Should you model the skill if you are not strong in the skill yourself, or have
another student model it?

- How much time should be focussed on instruction vs. time practicing the skill?
