O urdiscussion now proceeds by a series ofobservations.

1.Poverty a C rim e. I hold that poverty is a social

crim e.

Poverty is a crim e,not ofthe m any against the one,

but ofthe m any againstthe m any.

Poverty is the one universalsign ofincom petence, the

sign thatpoints to the prosperous m ultitude rather than to
the unfortunate individual. The individual's incom petence
m ay be enforced, butthat ofthe prosperous m any is self-
chosen. The people can have anything on w hich they can
agree and for w hich they w illpersistently stand.

B utthe people perm it poverty because they do not know

how to getrid ofit, and this incom petence is a crim e
because the people do not sufficiently desire that every
m an,w om an and child on earth shallhave enough for
health ofbody and grow th ofsoul.

It is for such reasons that m any are haunted by the fear

ofpoverty in the future. The idea is preposterous and
m onstrous that any hum an being should go into old age
dependent upon charity for food, clothing, shelter and
books. The earth is so big,— and so beautiful,— and so
rich!Yet this fear hides in the heart ofthousands.

It is notthe present objectto instruct in the prevention

ofpoverty. You w illfind m uch to the point in "Pow erFor

Save a good percentage ofyourw age orsalary.

N evertheless, such suggestions do notreckon w ith "bad

heart and thoughtthroughoutthe years.N ow ,these last
w ords are im portantfor they tellthe m ain story.

2. "Luck" is R eal.

The factors ofthe "lucky" and the "unlucky" should be

reckoned w ith.It is the habit of"w ise"people w ho have
never m etw ith m ishap to insist sturdily and w ith
scientific accuracy that "there is no such thing as luck,"
since allevents are results ofoperation oflaw s.The

are " lucky."

W hen you are "unlucky,"the "w ise"rem ark m eans

or event.Yet for the fact, again, the "unlucky" people are

them selves alw ays m ore or less atfault.Letus observe in
this m atter:

Every m an and w om an in this w orld gets in the long run, after

childhood, and excepting som e aw fulhandicaps ofbirth —

som ew hat m ore than he m orally and seem ingly deserves,

"B ad luck" is a fact.B ut thought is also a fact.As a

W e begin,then,w ith the m ere pow er ofthought,just as
