Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in 1925. By 2004, the University has grown to a total of 42 Departments,
belonging to 9 Faculties. With an enrollment of 77000 students, and 2500 faculty appointments, Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki is the biggest institution in Greek higher education and the largest in the Balkans.
The Department of Drama is one of the four departments of the School of Fine Arts, which was founded in 1984; the
rst class of theatre students was enrolled in the academic year 1992-93. The Department oers a ve-year
undergraduate course (Ptychion in Drama and Theatre Studies) which explores both theoretical and practical aspects
of the theatre arts.

INTRODUCTION STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
The programme of studies at the Department of Drama Students have to pass a total of 63 courses, and complete
seeks to bridge the gap between theory, scholarship, and a nal year project.
practice, placing equal emphasis on theatre theory,
history and practice.
All courses belong to one of three categories:
The curriculum is divided in two phases.
1. Compulsory Core Courses (31 courses):
During the rst three years of study, students have to
a) Core Theatrology (21 courses)

the historical and theoretical study of theatre, b) Theatre in Education (6 courses)
dramaturgy and performance theory. At the same time, c) Foreign language requirement (4 courses)

In 1999, the Student Association of the Department of
Drama organized the 3rd Balkan Festival of University
Theatre Schools, in Thessaloniki. The Department
participated in the Greek delegation in the International
Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre Architecture
Prague Quadrennial 2003 and 2007 and also in the
International Festival of Theatre Schools in Brno.

LIBRARY

The Department of Drama houses its own specialized


library in its departmental building (122, Egnatia Str.). The
collection includes thousands of books, periodicals in
Greek and other European languages, as well as an
extensive archive of theatre programmes, posters,
photographs and recorded (video and audio) material.

CLIO THEATRE

The Clio Theatre is the departmental theatre venue. It


seats 120 spectators and has a fully equipped theatre
stage.

STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS

There are two student associations: the Association of the


Students of the Drama Department and that of the
Graduates of the Drama Department.
