 Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in 1925. By 2004, the University has grown to a total of 42 Departments,
belonging to 9 Faculties. With an enrollment of 77000 students, and 2500 faculty appointments, Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki is the biggest institution in Greek higher education and the largest in the Balkans.
The Department of Drama is one of the four departments of the School of Fine Arts, which was founded in 1984; the
rst class of theatre students was enrolled in the academic year 1992-93. The Department oers a ve-year
undergraduate course (Ptychion in Drama and Theatre Studies) which explores both theoretical and practical aspects
of the theatre arts.

 INTRODUCTION
The programme of studies at the Department of Drama
seeks to bridge the gap between theory, scholarship, and
practice, placing equal emphasis on theatre theory,
history and practice.
The curriculum is divided in two phases.
During the rst three years of study, students have to
pass a number of core course requirements, related to
the historical and theoretical study of theatre,
dramaturgy and performance theory. At the same time,
they must enroll to introductory courses pertaining to
several aspects of theatre practice (acting, stage design
and directing), as well as to drama in education. In
addition, there is a foreign language requirement.
In the next phase, students work towards specializing in
one of four majors: (a) dramaturgy and performance th-
eory, (b) stage design, (c) acting, (d) general theatre stu-
dies. The programme of studies includes also two more
complementary units of courses, one focusing on direc-
ting and another on lm studies. Students are obliged to

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
Students have to pass a total of 63 courses, and complete
a nal year project.
All courses belong to one of three categories:
1. Compulsory Core Courses (31 courses):
a) Core Theatrology (21 courses)
b) Theatre in Education (6 courses)
c) Foreign language requirement (4 courses)
2. Elective Courses (27 courses):
a) Dramaturgy and Performance Theory
b) Set and costume design
c) Acting
3. Free Elective Courses (5 courses)
All courses meet for three hours per week (some
exceptions apply to courses involving physical training
and studio work).
Within the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), most
courses oered by the Department of Drama are
equivalent to 4,5 ECTS credits. Free Elective Courses and
Foreign Language Courses are equivalent to 3 ECTS.
Coursework and student evaluation is decided by the fa-
culty member teaching each course; students might have
to take written or oral examinations, or a combination of
both.
Active class participation is essential for this programme
of study.

 4. Final Year Project
The nal year project consists of (a) a written thesis or a
theatre production or a stage design project, depending
on the direction chosen by the student and (b) a 45
minute lecture on a subject of the students choice
(20+10=30 ECTS).
POSTGRADUATE STUDIES
Since October 2006, a postgraduate degree (MA) is
oered on Theatrical performance: History, Theory,
Practice with ve dierent majors: Performance Theory
and Dramatology, Stage and Costume Design, Acting,
Directing, Theatre in Education. The course expands over
two academic semesters, plus an extra 4-month period
for the preparation and submission of the postgraduate
dissertation or project. Applicants should hold an
undergraduate degree on Theatre Studies from a Greek
university; graduates of foreign universities may also
apply, provided that their degrees are ocially certied
as equivalent to the Greek ptychion. Students who have
successfully completed a postgraduate degree may
submit a PhD research proposal.
ACADEMIC CALENDAR
Fall Semester: 4 October 21 January.
Winter Examination Period: 24 January 11 February.
Spring Semester: 14 February 27 May.
Summer Examination Period: 1 30 June.
Students may complete all incomplete coursework for
both semesters in the three week examination period of
September.

During the academic year, there are two fortnight
recessions: one for Christmas (from December 24 to
January 7) and one for Easter (from Holy Monday to
Sunday after Easter).
CULTURAL EVENTS
The Department of Drama participates not only in the
University's cultural life, but also in what happens in
Thessaloniki, and the broader area of South-eastern
Europe. Exhibitions related to theatre projects are put
together on a regular basis.
In February-March 2002, the Department organized a
show entitled From Text to Image and Space to
celebrate its tenth anniversary.
In November 2007 the Department co-organised with
the Department of Film the international conference
Acting on Stage Acting on Film.
In September 2010 an international conference on
Performance in post-WWII Theatre: Continuities and
Discontinuities in honour of Nikiforos Papandreou was
held.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The Department has established collaborations with
foreign institutions of higher education under the
Socrates-Erasmus programme of exchanges (Freie
Universitt Berlin, Universit d'Avignon et des Pays de
Vaucluse, Universit de la Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris III,
Universit degli Studi di Genova, University of Exeter, Real
Escuela Superior de Arte Dramatico). In addition to these
exchanges, the Department participates very actively in
Balkan and European university theatre events, and on a
yearly basis to the Meeting of Students of the Faculties
and Academies of Dramatic Arts (SKOMRAHI) in Skopje.
In 1999, the Student Association of the Department of
Drama organized the 3rd Balkan Festival of University
Theatre Schools, in Thessaloniki. The Department
participated in the Greek delegation in the International
Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre Architecture
Prague Quadrennial 2003 and 2007 and also in the
International Festival of Theatre Schools in Brno.

LIBRARY

The Department of Drama houses its own specialized

library in its departmental building (122, Egnatia Str.). The
collection includes thousands of books, periodicals in
Greek and other European languages, as well as an
extensive archive of theatre programmes, posters,
photographs and recorded (video and audio) material.

CLIO THEATRE

The Clio Theatre is the departmental theatre venue. It

seats 120 spectators and has a fully equipped theatre
stage.

STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS

There are two student associations: the Association of the

Students of the Drama Department and that of the
Graduates of the Drama Department.
