THE ALEXANDER OF TROY ROMANCE

IN THE GRIGOROVICHS CODEX (15TH CENTURY):
A CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE
OF LOW-STYLE SERBIAN CHURCH SLAVONIC

S u m m a r y

The paper has sought to examine syntactic and semantic feautures of hypotactic struc-
tures in the Alexander of Troy Romance in order to shed light on functional stratification
of Serbian Church Slavonic. The functionally stylistic status of the compositions lan-
guage has been explained through the percentage ratio of competing syntactic strategies
expressing the same meaning, primarly in the domain of bookish ones and competing
normative possibilities which also exist in the vernacular. The results of the research,
compared with the findings from other texts of a similar type and also from the approxi-
mately same time, confirm that the Alexander of Troy Romance was written in low-style
Serbian Church Slavonic. The main characteristics of low-style Serbian Church Slavonic,
which also reflect in this composition, are: the absence of formal calcs along with the
selection of syntactic strategies that have a foothold in the Old Serbian system, as well
as the tendency towards verbally expressed hypotactic meanings and relatively simple
and transparent semantic relations within a complex sentence. In that way, all these texts,
although adhering to Church Slavonic norm, were syntactically brought closer to the
vernacular. The main impetus for such a choice from the syntactic register of Church
Slavonic was of pragmatic nature functional adjustment to the addressees, who were
not (always) skilled in Liturgical Church Slavonic. The research has been conducted on
the manuscript copy from the Grigorovichs codex originating from the 15th century. The
codex is the property of the State Library in Odessa, the collection of Viktor Grigorovich.
