Nat Turner was viewed as a prophet by his followers. Nat himself believed
he was receiving messages from God.
Nat Turner was well educated, especially for someone born in slavery. His
mastery of language made him a capable rhetorician, revolutionary, and
minister.
In response to his rebellion, the education of blacks was suppressed.
Other privileges were also taken away.

For example, children were smothered, schools were attacked, and only a
few poor whites were spared.
In response to his rebellion, emancipation fell on deaf Southern ears.
Many once sympathetic Southerners lived in fear of another slave revolt.
Facts about Margaret Garner
Margaret Garner killed her youngest daughter to protect her from a life of
slavery. She failed to kill the other children and herself.

Her story was the basis for Beloved by Toni Morrison.
The murder received national attention. The Cincinnati Gazette ran the
headline: A SLAVE MOTHER MURDERS HER CHILD RATHER THAN
TO SEE IT RETURNED TO SLAVERY.
Her trial put a spotlight on the Fugitive Slave Act. Ultimately, the Garner
family was determined as property to be returned.
Margaret Garner disappeared after a sketchy steamboat collision. She
was presumed alive for a while thereafter.
