Writing Assignment 1

In chapter three of Mills On Liberty, he discusses individuality as an

element of well-being. Mill defines individuality as the spontaneity learned

from interpreting experiences best suitable for ones self. He believes

individuality must assert itself in areas that are of no concern to others

because human nature is not a machine to be built after a model (Mill, 53,

55). Mill believes humanity wasnt made to conform to each other, stating

that there should be different experiments of living (Mill, 53). It is up to the

individual to interpret experiences in his or her own manner. Near the end of

this chapter, Mill brings up the point that existence shouldnt be based upon

patterns. One should draw from common sense and experience to lay out his

or her existence in its best mode (Mill, 63).

I believe he is adamant about individuality because it correlates with

his argument on freedom of opinions. One should be allowed to have his or

her own opinions so long as they do not elicit actions that cause harm to

others. This ties into Mills anti-paternalistic view that the government should

not get involved in other peoples lives because only ones self knows what is

best. In terms of individuality, this relates to society forcing others to

conform, suppressing the spontaneity and originality that accompanies

individuality.
I would have to agree with Mill that society puts too much emphasis on

conformity. One does not learn how to better his or her self by following the

same route as others. Different people require different conditions to

succeed in life, and this can only be learned through experiences. Mill states

that as ones individuality is developed, he or she becomes more valuable

to himself [or herself] (Mill, 59). Basically, through life experiences, one can

learn and interpret experiences and apply them to his or her life. Rather than

relying on someone elses guidance, its up to you to decide how you want to

live your life. Do not conform, but be transformed.
