VERTICAL AND FILLING AND HORIZONTAL MAINTENANCE BLADDER TANKS MANUAL — SECTION Equipment Description System Schematics Installation Auxiliary Filling Equipment Initial Fil ‘Minor Refill* ‘Major Refilt™ Inspection Maintenance Service and Repair Warranty Ader leaner tes tan 25% scan, ~ Auger Pi acon cma fan 2% th onan PAGE 12 13 4 This manual is intended as a guide for both the Ansul Vertical Bladder Tanks and Horizontal Bladder Tanks. If there are any questions, or further information is required, contact Ansul Incorporated, Applications Engineering, Marinette, WI 54143-2542. ‘Those who design, instal, operate, refil, inspect, or maintain these systems should read this entire manual. IMPORTANT ‘This equipment is designed for use on only Class A Fires and Class B Hydrocarbon Fires. Only ANSULITE ARC (Alcohol- Resistant Concentrate) 6% can be used on Class B Hydrocarbon and Polar Solvent Fires. Bladder tanks are mechanical devices. They need periodic care. Inspections provide reasonable assurance that the bladder tank is full and the system is operable. Inspection should take into consideration the environment, system use, and user inspection policy; but as a minimum should be con” ducted semi-annually. Maintenance, which provides maxi ‘mum assurance that the Ansul foam concentrate is effective and the system is operable, should be conducted at annual intervals, or earlier when indicated by an inspection. )\, WARNING ‘Maximum working pressure for an Ansul bladder tank is 175 psi (12.06 bar). ASME Code requires over pressure protection prior to placing this vessel in service. Ansul has not provided ‘over pressure protection with this vessel. It shall be the responsibility of Owner to arrange for such over pressure protection, NOTE: Ansul has not provided an over pressurization device because the water supply pressure and flow ‘capacity of your fre protection system and the details of the complete system design must be known before an over pressure protection device can be provided, Therefore, the owner or the engineer designing the fire protection’system shall have the responsibilty of deter- ‘mining and arranging for the type of over pressure pro- tection that should be provided for this vessel as part of the fire protection system. If additional information or assistance is required, please contact your fre protection system engineer. Cu Do not weld on the bladder tank. The tank contains an elastomeric bladder and interior protective coating which will be destroyed by welding temperatures. For additional information contact Ansul Incorporated, Applications Engineering, Marinette, WI 54143-2542. Because the foam concentrate will undergo thermal expansion as the temperature increases, itis important, that at the time of filing, the temperature of the concen trate be as close as possible to the actual ambient tem- perature where the tank will be located. IMPORTANT If the system is to be connected to a “Closed Head Sprinkler System,” contact, ‘Ansul Incorporated, Applications Engineer- ing, Marinette, Wi 54143-2542. NOTICE ‘Ansul Foam Concentrates must be stored within the temperature range listed on the tank nameplate. If the concentrates require storage outside of these temperature ranges, consult Ansul Incorporated, Applications Engineering, Marinette, Wi 54143-2542, Also, particular attention should be given to the Field Inspection Manual (Part No. 31274) which deals with the testing proce dures for ANSULITE AFFF Concentrates. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION Page 1 EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION The Ansul Bladder Tank is the main component ina bladder storage proportioning system. These tanks are avalable in Tee verical or horizontal eonfigurations Both the vertical and horizontal bladder tanks consist of the folowing components: 1. ASME constructed steel pressure vessel 2. Flexible elastomeric bladder Sterne, 3, Perforated center discharge tubes 4, Four one-inch ball valves: bladder venti valve, — wren bladder drain/fill valve, tank shell vent valve, and tank mer shel rain valve FIGURE 1 TTI on FIGURE 2 ‘SYSTEM SCHEMATICS Page 2 ‘SYSTEM SCHEMATICS The following schematics (Figures 9 and 4) represent typical system piping and valving arrangements for bladder propor- tioning systems with vertical or horizontal tank configura tions. These systems, however, must be designed by com- petent, experienced engineers to ensure equipment compat- ibility; proper functioning ofthe system; and compliance with NFPA codes, as well as local and end-user requirements. ‘Ansul typically supplies the foam agent, bladder tank with tank valves, proportioner with bul-in metering orifice, and most discharge devices. The special operational valves (manual or automated), strainers, and interconnecting piping are not normally supplied by Ansul PROPORTIONER STRANER REQUIRED WMA (ain Sa autouateD) FIGURE 3 IMPORTANT Because of the similarities between vertical and horizontal bladder tanks, the proce- ‘dures and tank valve functions are identi- cal. Therefore, vertical bladder tank ‘schematics are used exclusively through- ‘out the remainder of this manual. For hori= zontal bladder tanks, refer back to Figures 2 or 4 for valve locations. yopigcuanoe iowa) ae FIGURE 4 INSTALLATION To prepare the bladder tank for placement in service: 1. Remove all cord, wrapping, and banding ties. Examine entire system and component parts for concealed ship- ping damage before placement or securement on site IMPORTANT If the bladder tank is to be connected to a “Closed Head Sprinkler System,” contact, ‘Ansul Incorporated, Applications Engineer- ing, Marinette, Wi 54149-2542. 2. ‘Anchor system to floor. AU Do not weld on the bladder tank. The tank contains {an elastomeric bladder and interior protective coating which will be destroyed by welding temperatures. For additional information contact Ansul Incor- Porated, Applications Engineering, Marinette, WI 54143-2542, NoTICE For bladder tank dimensions, refer to Vertical and Horizontal Bladder Tank Data Sheet (Form No. F-83178). 8. Install foam proportioner in main distribution supply pipe to discharge devico(s). NoTice ‘The proportioner must be mounted at the same elevation as the top flange of the tank or a normally-cosed valve (manual or automated) must be installed in the foam concentrate line to prevent agent migra- tion. A concentrate isolation valve is required to isolate the tank during filing procedures. 4. Install piping trom water supply upstream of proportioner (see Figures 3 and 4) and to the bladder tank water inet using the appropriate piping, valves, gauges, unions, ‘tc, as determined by the system design engineer. INSTALLATION Page 3 TNs} ‘Maximum working pressure for an Ansul bladder tank is 175 psi (12.06 bar). ‘ASME Code requires over pressure protection prior to placing this vessel in service. Ansul has not pro- vided over pressure protection with this vessel. It shall be the responsibility of Owner to arrange for ‘such over pressure protection. Verify that over pressure protection has been provid- {ed for this vessel within the fire protection system. If additional information or assistance is required, please contact the fire prote engineer. Install piping from the bladder tank foam concentrate outlet to the proportioner concentrate inlet using appro- priate piping, valves, strainers, check valves, unions, ftc., as determined by the system design engineer. If an optional sight gauge is provided, install gauge by completing the following steps: a. Remove plug from tee located adjacent to the Bladder Drain/Fill Valve near the bottom of the tank. (Gee Figure 1 or 2.) b. Screw sight gauge assembly into tee using Teflon tape on male threads of nipple. ©. Snap end of support into adapter located on side of tank. AUXILIARY FILLING EQUIPMENT Page 4 ‘The following equipment is not supplied by Ansul, but Is required for Initial Fill and Major Refill. (See Figures 3 and 4.) 1. AWetiDry shop vacuum with a 2 HP motor or larger. 2. Appropriate pipe fittings and duct tape to connect the 3 ‘vacuum hose tothe 1 inch NPT Tank Shell Vent Valve. Concentrate fil pump* capable of 25 GPM (maximum) ‘output at 15 psi (1.03 bar), pump suction and discharge hose, a two-position ball valve, and all appropriate fit- tings for connecting tothe 1 inch NPT Bladder Drair/Fill Valve. “Ansul Bladder Tank Fill Pump (Includes suction and clear discharge hose) Part No. 72724, or equal. NoTICE Prior to adding AFFF concentrate to the tank, its refractive index should be mea- ‘sured and recorded on the Field Inspection Record (Form No. F-7880), along with a tefractive index vs. concentration curve. ‘The procedures for these operations are covered in the Field Inspection Manual (Part No. 31274). itis also required that the batch numbers from the concentrate pails be recorded on the Field Inspection Record (Form No. F-7880) for future refer- ence. The testing procedures for non-AFFF foams are covered in NFPA Standard 11, Chapter 6. To initially fill a bladder tank: AL) Because the foam concentrate will undergo thermal expansion as the temperature increases, it is important, that at the time of fling, the temperature of the concen trate be as close as possible to the actual ambient tem- perature where the tank will be located, Fill the bladder only to the capacity specified on tank nameplate. Overfiling may result in bladder damage. 1. Flemove plastic shipping plugs from all bladder tank trim valves. 2.
