Tectonics and Sedimentation of Indonesia
INTRODUCTION First FOSI regional seminar to commemorate 50th anniversary of the CONTENTS GEOLOGY OF INDONESIA book authored by R. W. van Bemmelen. IN MEMORIAM Bandung, 15-17 March 1999 R.W. van Bemmelen Institute of Technology, Bandung Organized by FOSI - IAGI -ITB Proceedings editor : Herman Darman (Shell) and F. H. Sidi (VICO) This proceeding contains 32 abstracts and extended abstracts, which will be presented in the regional seminar of the Tectonics and Sedimentation of Indonesia. The well-balanced content of the book should prove particularly attractive to those who seek a detailed state-of-the-science overview of this large and ever-expanding subject area. The seminar is organized by the Indonesian Sedimentologists Forum (FOSI), the Indonesian Association of Geologists (IAGI) and the host, the Geological Department of the Institute of Technology, Bandung (ITB). The regional seminar from which this volume resulted was convened at the Sasana Budaya Ganesha, Institute of Technology, Bandung (ITB), from 15-20 March 1999, as a memorial meeting of the 50th anniversary of The Geology of Indonesia publication, authored by Prof. R. W. van Bemmelen in 1949. We felt that significant advances have been made in our understanding on the regional geology of Indonesia and yet not collated into a useful reference source such as The Geology of Indonesia and timely forum was long overdue to enable workers to disseminate this knowledge. The three days seminar included 32 papers and 5 posters covering regional geology of Indonesian basins, their tectonism processes which responsible for basin configuration and the sedimentary processes, which fill the basin afterwards. The seminar was opened by Dr. Yahdi Zaim as the department head of the Geology Department of ITB and Yanto R. Sumantri as the president of IAGI. Following the three days seminar there was a course on the Sequence Stratigraphy by Dr. Henry Posamentier (ARCO) and a field trip to Cinambo Area led by Dr. Kustomo Hasan (GRDC/PPPG). We would like to thank SEPM and IAS for their generous sponsorship of the meeting and this publication. We also wish to thank the Royal Geological and Mining Society of the Netherlands (KNGMG) for their permission for re-publishing their related articles and their assistance in gathering information on Prof. R. W. van Bemmelen.
