Page 1 of 5 ‘MEMB123, Semester 1 2011/2012 QUESTION 1 [15 MARKS) Given two vectors: S=Ti-2)+5KN Sj+4km a) Compute the scalar products of $-T and cross product of $ x T [8 marks] Te b) Find the angle © between the two vectors § and T [4 marks] ) Describe a vector and scalar quantities and give two examples of each quantity. [3 marks] QUESTION 2 [15 MARKS} The three cables AD, AB and AC ate used to support the 500 N lamp as shown in Figure 2, Determine the forces developed along the three cables for the lamp to be in equilibrium. The weight of the wing is 20 kN and it acts at G. [4 marks] b) Derive the expression for the shear forve V and the bending moment M in the beam as a function of x. [10 marks} ©) Draw shear and ben ng-moment diagrams for the beam, [6 marks] QUESTION 5 [15 MARKS} Determine the coordinates of centroid of the shaded area of thin, uniform sheet metal shape as shown in Figure 5, Figure 5 Page 4 of 5 ‘MEMB123, Semester 1 2011/2012 QUESTION 6 [20 MARKS) ‘Two blocks are connected by a cable that passes over a frictionless pulley as shown in Figure 6. A pull force, Tis applied on block B. Block A weights 60 kg and block B weights 90 kg respectively. Given the coefficient of static and kinetic friction between blocks and the ramps ate 4, + 0,5 and j4; = 0.2 respectively: a) Determine the force T required to produce impending motion of block B down the ramp. [14 marks} b) Assume that sufficient force is applied to block B to start the blocks sliding. Determine the force 7 required to keep the blocks moving at a constant speed.
