Yakov Drakenhof, born to a human noble in the city of Drakenhof he

was hidden from the world for much of his childhood due to the dubious
circumstances of his birth. When he was just reaching adolescence, the
secret was discovered and his mother executed for consorting with a
vampire Yakov escaped using his strange talents of persuasion and control of
lesser minds, and ran from his home. Now an adult, Yakov spent much of his
adolescence roaming the country finding shelter with whoever would give it
to him. He honed his mental abilities and though he was no longer
technically a noble he still retained an air of nobility which allowed him to
pass through towns and villages easily as most peasants respect the noble
class.
Through most of his later life, his only friend and companion was a
large raven that he had found as a chick and had raised to be a loyal
companion. Something about him seemed to draw the raven though he has
never been able to figure out what. It would sit on his shoulder, gazing eerily
at those who got too close. Due to his vampire heritage, Yakov had an
almost perfect beauty about him, an appearance that was both alluring and
terrifying for reasons most people could never understand. He decided, tired
of wandering, to use this appearance and his powers of the mind to influence
a small town into believing that he was a local noble, living in the old
mansion (long unoccupied) on the edge of town. He lived a decently
peaceful life there, the peasantry liked him for his kind presence and his
benevolence and their children liked him for the tricks he could do and the
stories he would tell them. He was genuinely loved and respected by these
people.
Sadly, the secrets of his heritage were discovered one day by a
travelling caravan. He had not known they were in town and had not put a
glamour on his eyes and teeth as he though no one was around to see and it
was taxing. One of the merchants of the caravan saw him and gave a
terrified cry of "Vampire!" as he ran away down the street in the early
morning. Yakov fled to his home thinking that without his presence there the
people would not believe this stranger, but it was not so. The people of that
town came to his small mansion on the outskirts with torches aloft and cries
of burnings and beheadings and "kill the vampire!". He tried to reason with
them, counting on their love and respect for him after so many years to
assuage the hatred but to no avail. They set fire to his mansion and though
Yakov escaped, most of his belongings and his small fortune were destroyed
in the blaze.
That day he learned that no one could be trusted and no one was
worthy of his affection and something within him changed. The kind man
who would tell stories to the village children was gone and in his place, was a
man full of nothing but contempt for the world around him. He began to hone
his mental powers to a new goal: causing chaos and disorder, and ensuring
that the only one to gain from his power would be himself. He set himself up
in a new place, a large city this time, and began to amass a name for
himself. Many years he worked at his reputation until many knew him for a
cunning and sly noble that few had dealings with that did not end in his
favour rather than theirs. His deeds were noted by a follower of Nemyth
Vaar, the risen god of chaos, betrayal, insanity, and revenge. The Irreverent
which came to him to Yakov of how his deeds had pleased The Nemesis and
told him of the ways of Nemyth Vaar. Yakov was intrigued and began to
follow their ways more closely.
Eventually, news of his heritage spread, though this time there was no
escaping to another city. When something like this is discovered in such a
large place, the whole country finds out. And so, he had only one option left.
The Irreverent with whom Yakov had spent a great deal of time gave him an
option. Go to Eosia and begin spreading the word of The Nemesis. Get
yourself a name and a reputation and expand the Court of Debts and you will
be rewarded. And so, he charted passage across the sea to a new world and
a new goal.

Nemyth Vaar
The Knight Demise

The Knight Demise has shrines, collectively called the Court of Debts, in most
major cities and many smaller towns. Even a single Irreverent, as the clergy
are dubbed, can represent the Court of Debts in a village and take tithes
from the carefully guilty and the fearfully innocent alike. The Irreverants are
tolerated in most cities because of the vital civil service they provide: they
staff and maintain asylums.
