A NOTE TO OUR CHILDREN, TO THE VERY YOUNG
In this chapter, we tried to share stories
remembering the short but eventful lives of
our peers, our brothers who paid the ultimate
price for standing and fighting for a just society
during one of the very shining but at the same
time dark moments in Ethiopias history. It is
about a generation of young people who grew
up together in the same neighbourhood in
Addis Ababa, Kebena - Korea Sefer.
When we grew up in that little corner of
Addis Ababa, known as Kebena, Korea Sefer,
we had very little, in material sense. We were,
however, very close knit community who were
happy, proud, strong and optimistic souls in the
face of adversity.
Our happy teenage life did not last long
however. There was a revolution in our country
that started in 1974 a radical social upheaval
and process of change.
Almost every young people in our neigh-
bourhood began playing, as all others around
the country, one or other roles in that diffi-
cult process of change. We all were idealists,
dreamers of a transformed Ethiopia. We shared
one common value and aspiration i.e. to see a
prosperous country, a more equitable and just
society.
However, because we Ethiopians, as people,
did not have a long standing tradition of han-
dling political differences in a peaceful manner,
things quickly turned violent. Political killings
and persecutions engulfed our country, our
neighbourhood. Sadly, not all of the boys from
our neigbourhood survived that brutally violent
period of our country.
After more than thirty years, we are now hav-
ing a rare opportunity for us to remember and
pay tribute to those whose life was cut short
during that dark period. Those people who died
between 1977 and 1978 did not receive any fu-
neral. No one has information where their final
resting places were. Their families were not
even allowed to mourn their losses. The survi-
vors have, therefore, a solemn responsibility to
individually and collectively remember those
magnificent souls who departed us over 35
years ago. Those of us who are from that era
and who are still alive are lucky not only to sur-
vive the guillotine of the 1970s but also to be
able to establish families.
We all have our roots in Kebena, Janmeda,
Koreasefer, different names of the same place,
more or less. We wish our children to know
where we, their parents, came from. From the
life we lived, we want you to know that free,
stable, peaceful, and decent living conditions
are not something that you find everywhere
and every time. Many aspects of human life are
not and should not be taken for granted.
