There are two main categories of computer software: system software and application software.
System software is a basic requirement for any computer, as it controls all main functions and
integrates all parts into a unitary system. An example of a system software is an operating system.
Time-sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also
include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, printing, and
other resources.
For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts
as an intermediary between programs and the computer hardware,[1][2] although the application
code is usually executed directly by the hardware and frequently makes system calls to an OS
function or is interrupted by it. Operating systems are found on many devices that contain a
computer from cellular phones and video game consoles to web servers and supercomputers.
2.1 Example of Open Source
Operating System
Linux: A computer operating system and kernel originating as a UNIX system and
existing in many versions.
Ubuntu: is a Debian -based Linux operating system and distribution for personal
computers, smart phones and network servers. It uses Unity as its default user interface. It
is based on free software and named after the Southern African philosophy
of ubuntu (literally, 'human-ness'), which Canonical Ltd suggests can be loosely translated
as "humanity to others" or "I am what I am because of who we all are".
3.0 OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE
3.1 Meaning of Open Source Application Software
Open source application software is computer software that has source code that can be modified
or enhanced by anyone. The source code contains the underlying programming code that
determines how the software looks and works.
Software that allows only the software owners to modify the source code is called proprietary
software or closed source software. In this case, only the original authors are legally allowed to
copy or modify the source code. Examples of proprietary software are Microsoft Office and
Adobe Photoshop. A person who buys a copy of proprietary software is actually buying a license
to use the software according to its terms, which often specify how many copies can be made and
restrict access to the source code.
Mozilla Firefox 47.0 (2016) -is a free and open source web browser descended from the Mozilla
Application Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. Firefox had 22.51% of the recorded
usage share of web browsers as of May 2009, making it the second most popular browser in terms
of current use worldwide, after Internet Explorer .To display web pages, Firefox uses the Gecko
layout engine, which implements most current web standards. in addition to a few features which
are intended to anticipate likely additions to the standards.
BitComet 1.42 (2016) (originally named Simple BT client from versions 0.11 to 0.37) is a cross-
protocol Bit Torrent, HTTP and FTP client written in C++ for Microsoft Windows and available
in 52different languages. Its first public release was version 0.28. The current BitComet logo has
been used since version 0.50.The BitComet program is a multi-threaded multi-protocol hybrid
download manager and Bit Torrent Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing application. It supports
simultaneous download tasks. To complete a particular download, it can draw parts of files from
many sources across different P2P and Client-server protocols.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS)
that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near the Earth, where
there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is maintained by the United
States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver. The GPS project was
developed in 1973 to overcome the limitations of previous navigation systems, integrating ideas
from several predecessors, including a number of classified engineering design studies from the
1960s. GPS was created and realized by the U.S. Department of Defense (USDOD) and was
originally run with 24 satellites. It became fully operational in 1994.
5.0 CONCLUSION
Open source software are very use full and have a very good function in this modern era. Its
also have a copyright claims to prevent impersonation copyright. Open source software is
