Here is the checklist for ensuring the warm and welcoming environment for

newcomer students and families to the school:

Have a plan to welcome the ELLs and their families. Establish a school reception
team (e.g., administrator, office administrative assistant, ESL/ELD teacher,
interpreter, settlement worker).
Multilingual welcome signs in the languages of the community are posted in the
school. Multilingual nature of the school is reflected throughout the building.
Ensure comfortable spaces for families and reception teams to meet and share
information.
We can support equitable practices by having open dialogue with students, parents
and the community and listening to what the needs are, and suggestions they have
and what they would like to see change.
Provide parent with one page information sheet about the school and have it
translated into various community languages.
Quality and professional learning for all staff members.
Display Signs and notices directing people to the classroom, library and office in
various languages.
Utilize community languages whenever possible.
Encourage newcomer families to get involved in school activities.
Inform parents about the community programs, supports and resources.
Involve staff and student in the orientation of the new student to the school.
Provide dual language and multi-language material in the office, library resource
centre and in the classrooms.
Include students in the pedagogy it is important because if they cannot see
themselves in what they are learning they cannot relate and pull from personal
experience, and as a result will be disinterested and unmotivated in what they are
learning. Simultaneously to keeping students interested it encourages a sense of
self and personal identity to embrace their heritage and culture, and learn to be
respectful and tolerant of others.
ncourage students to share their stories, information and experiences about their
language and culture.
The school I am volunteering display the visuals on the wall throughout the school,
which shows it is multilingual school. There are staff members who speak several
languages. The school also organises workshops and parents night to bridge the
gap between parents and staff of the school. I also think they should invite
newcomer families to help with classroom activities and share information with the
class about their traditions.
