PUBLISHE 's PREFACE
About the Book
Th is is a collectio n of five a Iche ica I tracts written by one of the most famous alchemists who s said to have discovered the Philosopher's Stone. In these writings Paracelsus attempts to educate the reader about the ature of the Philosopher's Stone and the scientific principles fro which we can be assured of its existence and understand ho it works. Like all alchemical tracts, the language is very c ptic and allegorical so as to be unintelligible to the unworthy.
About the Author
Paracelsus (1493 - 1541)
Paracelsus, born in Einsiedeln Switzerland, was an alchemist, physician, astrologer, and ge eral occultist. Born phillip von Hohenheim, he later took up t e name Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus von Hoh nheim, and still later took the title Paracelsus, meaning "eq al to or greater than Celsus", a Roman encyclopedist from the first century known for his tract on medicine.
Paracelsus wrote many tracts n alchemy, mostly dealing with the nature of the so-called Ph losopher's Stone. Sadly, Paracelsus died an early, violent deat at the hands of those who were jealous of his supieror knowle ge and annoyed by his arrogant attitude.

PREFACE
YOU who are skilled in Alchemy, nd as many others as promise yourselves great riches a chiefly desire to make gold and silver, which Alche y in different ways promises and teaches; equally, too, you who willingly undergo toil and vexations, and wish not to be reed from them, until you have attained your rewards, and the fulfilment of the promises made to you; experience teac es this every day, that out ofthousands of you not even one ac mplishes his desire. Is this a failure of Nature or of Art? I say, no; but it is rather the fault offate, or ofthe u nskilfulness of th
Since, therefore, the characters of the sign of the stars and planets of heaven, together with the ther names, inverted words, receipts, materials, and instrume ts are thoroughly well known to such as are acquainted wit this art, it would be altogether superfluous to recur to thes same subjects in the present book, although the use of s ch signs, names, and characters at the proper time is by no means without advantage.
But herein will be noticed another wa of treating Alchemy different from the previous method, and deduced by Seven Canons from the sevenfold series of th metals. This, indeed, will not give scope for a pompous arade of words, but, nevertheless, in the consideration of th se Canons everything which should be separated from Alch my will be treated at sufficient length, and, moreover, many ecrets of other things are herein contained. Hence, too, res It certain marvellous

speculations and new operations which frequently differ from the writings and opinions of ancient operators and natural philosophers but have been discovered and confirmed by full proof and ex erimentation.
Moreover, i this Art nothing is more true than this, though it be little kno n and gains small confidence. All the fault and cause of diff culty in Alchemy, whereby very many persons are reduced to overty, and others labour in vain, is wholly and solely lack 0 skill in the operator, and the defect or excess of materials, wether in quantity or quality, whence it ensues that, in the cours of operation, things are wasted or reduced to nothing. If t e true process shall have been found, the substance itself hile transmuting approaches daily more and more towards pe ction. The straight road is easy, but it is found by very few.
Sometimes i may happen that a speculative artist may, by his own eccent city, think out for himself some new method in Alchemy, be the consequence anything or nothing. He need do nought in 0 der to reduce something into nothing, and again bring back s mething out of nothing. Vet this proverb of the incredulous not wholly false. Destruction perfects that which is good; for he good cannot appear on account of that which conceals it. he good is least good whilst it is thus concealed. The conceal ent must be removed that so the good may be able freely t appear in its own brightness. For example, the mountain, th sand, the earth, or the stone in which a metal has grown is sue a concealment. Each one of the visible metals is a concealmen ofthe other six metals.
By the elem nt of fire all that is imperfect is destroyed and taken away, as, for instance, the five metals, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Venu , and Saturn.' On the other hand, the perfect metals, Sol a d Luna, are not consumed in that same fire. They

remain in the fire: and at he same time, out of the other imperfect ones which are d stroyed, they assume their own body and become visible t the eyes. How, and by what method, this comes about n be gathered from the Seven Canons. Hence it may be earnt what are the nature and property of each metal, wha it effects with the other metals, and what are its powers in co mixture with them.
But this should be noted in th very first place: that these Seven Canons cannot be perfectly u derstoad by every cursory reader at a first glance or a single re ding. An inferior intelligence does nat easily perceive occult a d abstruse subjects. Each one of these Canons demands no slight discussion. Many persons, puffed up with pride, fancy they can easily comprehend all which this book comprises. T us they set down its contents as useless and futile, thinking t ey have something far better of their own, and that therefore they can afford to despise what is here contained.
