AChem History of the Atom Timeline Project Unit 2

Name: _______________________________________________ Date: _______________________ Block: ___________

In this assignment you will be learning how our knowledge of the atom has developed over time. You will focus
on the scientist and models listed below. Answer the follow questions. Once you have researched and found the
information about each scientist or model, you will be creating a timeline.

On the timeline you will need to include:

1. The scientist name or models name (2 pts/section)

2. The year in which their work was done (2 pts/year)
3. A summary of their major contribution to the development of the atom (a summary of the answers to
the questions) (8 pts/section)
4. A picture for each scientists model or theory (this can be hand drawn or from the computer) (3
pts/pic)
5. It must be neat, organized, and have 3 colors other than your pen/pencil. (10 pts)

These questions are guidelines for the summary of their major contributions. You can add additional
information if you think it is relative to the assignment.

Democritus:

1. What was his contribution to the atomic model?

2. When did he make his theory?
3. Before Democritus proposed his idea, people accepted Aristotles view of what things were composed of.
What did Aristotle believe?

John Dalton

1. Dalton proposed an atomic theory. What were the five points of his atomic theory?
2. When did he create his theory?
3. Some of his points hold true today, but others have been modified. Which of his points are no longer true?
Why are they not true?

JJ Thompson

1. What did Thompson discover?

2. What did he use to discover it?
3. When did he discover it?
4. After his discovery, he made a new model of the atom. What was it called?
5. Describe his model of the atom.

Ernest Rutherford

1. What was Rutherfords experiment called? Explain the experiment.

2. What part of the atom was discovered from this experiment?
3. When did he discover it?
4. What did this experiment contribute to our knowledge of the atom?

Niels Bohr

1. What is another name for his model? Why is it called that?

2. When did he create this model?
3. What is Bohrs model useful for representing?

Erwin Schrodinger

1. What is the name of the current model?

2. When did we accept this model?
3. How is it different than from the Bohr Model?
