ABSTRACT: Distributed fiber optic sensors allow the measurement of structural parameters, such as strain
and temperature at thousands of locations along a single fiber sensor. This unique feature, having no parallel
in conventional sensing systems opens new possibilities for Structural Health Monitoring of large structures
and infrastructure systems.
This paper firstly briefly introduces the most prominent distributed sensing technologies and components, in-
cluding Brillouin and Raman Scattering sensor as well as Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors. Emphasis will be
given to the sensor packaging and installation techniques.
The second part presents several application examples, including monitoring of dams, bridges and pipelines.
The main monitoring aims are identification of high strain areas, crack onset, leakage and temperature distri-
butions.
