Performance Rating: Excellent_X____ Good Adequate No Opportunity to Observe Comments: Raul used his esearch of events leading up to the Constitutional Convention to give the students the background story. He also used a combination of student note taking (which he highlighted on his sides), discussion, and a quick write to summarize the information ‘Component Ib: Sets instructional goals meeting state and district standards. Performance Rating: Excellent Good_X. Adequate No Opportunity to Observe ‘Comments: His activity followed instructional goals for the district in using AVID techniques for instruction. The content of the lesson followed state objectives as well as common core objectives for writing, ‘Component 2a: Creates a culture for leaming through respect and rapport with students. Performance Rating: Excellent_X____ Good, Adequate ‘No Opportunity to Observe, Comments Raul made connections with the students by engaging their previous knowledge in order to connect with the lesson about the Constitutional Convention. He also brought more students int the discussion by using some spanish translation in the preamble Component 2b: Manages classroom procedures. Performance Rating: Excellent (Goode Kean Adequate ‘No Opportunity to Observe, Comments: Raul begins each period promptly by taking role, He has recognized the need to change procedures for different classes. An example ofthis is having larger classes tum in papers by row, whereas a smaller class will be allowed t0 ‘tum in an assignment all together. ‘Component 2c: Manages student behavior. Performance Rating: Excellent X__ Good, Adequate No Opportunity to Observe. Comments He is consistent in using both verbal and nonverbal communication in managing behavior. He recognizes off task behavior and corrects it promptly. He has been able to manage a student who is on the autism spectrum, while at the same time involving that student in class and not taking away from the other students leaming. ‘Component 3a: Communicates clearly and accurately. Performance Rating: Excellent__X__ Good, Adequate No Opportunity to Observe Comments: The slides that went with the lecture were clearin indication what the students were to wrte in theirnotes. The directions for the quick write summary at the end were clear and the task matched the objective/essential question, ‘Component 3b: Uses questioning and discussion techniques. Performance Rating: Excellent_X__ Good__ Adequate___ No Opportunity to Observe Comments Raul referenced previously leamed material about the re American Revolution to introduce the Constitutional Convention. The discussion and questioning prompted students to probe for deeper understanding. For example, he probed students to explain how the colonists dislike of British taxes might be like the events that led to Shay’ Rebellion. ‘Component 3c: Engages students in learning. Performance Rating: Excellent_X Good. Adequate__ No Opportunity to Observe ‘Comments: The students were engaged when writing notes and summarizing at the end. Using some spanish translations in the Preamble allowed some more students to be engaged in the discussion. ‘Component 3d: Provides feedback to students Performance Rating: Excellent Good_X___ Adequate ‘No Opportunity to Observe, Comments: Raul gave verbal feedback during the discussion. He also often checked for understanding through discussion, Students were prompted to offer a deeper understanding of content by making connections to previously leamed material, Raul has been timely in retuming conected assignments to students. ‘Component 3e: Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness. Performance Rating: Excellent Good_X. Adequate, No Opportunity 10 Observe ‘Comments: Raul adapts discussion and activities to advanced and regular classes. An example of this is in him creating copies ofthe lecture notes for students that have difficulty following/writing notes from the screen. He has also adjusted lessons and time spent on topics to coincide with changes that occur from week to week in the school schedule. ymponent 3E: Uses assessment to inform instruction and improve student achievement. Adequate No Opportunity to Observe Comments: The students utilize the Comell note method and Costa's levels of questioning to write questions in the ‘margin of their notes. They were also assigned to write a summary of theirnotes that answered the essential question, ‘Component 4a: Demonstrates professionalism Performance Rating: Excellent_X___ Good Adequate ‘No Opportunity to Observe, Comments: Raul is always prepared forhis lessons with activities and copies ofhandouts when needed. He has attended all, department meetings. ‘Component 4b: Reflects on teaching. Performance Rating: Excellent_X__ Good. Adequate, No Opportunity to Observe ‘Comments: Raul always looks for ways he might improve his instruction. He does this both between classes and at the end ofthe day. He has then made adjustments in teaching the next day. Uses technology in ways that make students productive ‘and meet the instructional goals of the lesson. Performance Rating: Excellent Good.
