Raul used his esearch of events leading up to the
Constitutional Convention to give the students the
background story. He also used a combination of student
note taking (which he highlighted on his sides),
discussion, and a quick write to summarize the
information

the district in using AVID techniques for instruction. The
content of the lesson followed state objectives as well as
common core objectives for writing,

Raul made connections with the students by engaging
their previous knowledge in order to connect with the
lesson about the Constitutional Convention. He also
brought more students int the discussion by using some
spanish translation in the preamble

Raul begins each period promptly by taking role, He has
recognized the need to change procedures for different
classes. An example ofthis is having larger classes tum in
papers by row, whereas a smaller class will be allowed t0

Comments
He is consistent in using both verbal and nonverbal
communication in managing behavior. He recognizes off
task behavior and corrects it promptly. He has been able
to manage a student who is on the autism spectrum, while
at the same time involving that student in class and not
taking away from the other students leaming.

The slides that went with the lecture were clearin
indication what the students were to wrte in theirnotes.
The directions for the quick write summary at the end were
clear and the task matched the objective/essential

Raul referenced previously leamed material about the re
American Revolution to introduce the Constitutional
Convention. The discussion and questioning prompted
students to probe for deeper understanding. For example,
he probed students to explain how the colonists dislike of
British taxes might be like the events that led to Shay’
Rebellion.

translations in the Preamble allowed some more students
to be engaged in the discussion.

Comments: Raul gave verbal feedback during the
discussion. He also often checked for understanding
through discussion, Students were prompted to offer a
deeper understanding of content by making connections to
previously leamed material, Raul has been timely in
retuming conected assignments to students.

‘Comments:
Raul adapts discussion and activities to advanced and
regular classes. An example of this is in him creating
copies ofthe lecture notes for students that have difficulty
following/writing notes from the screen. He has also
adjusted lessons and time spent on topics to coincide with
changes that occur from week to week in the school
schedule.ymponent 3E: Uses assessment to inform instruction and

‘margin of their notes. They were also assigned to write a
summary of theirnotes that answered the essential

Raul is always prepared forhis lessons with activities and
copies ofhandouts when needed. He has attended all,
department meetings.
